What AI can’t do is hunger for things
The People Who Will Thrive in the AI Age - The AtlanticLife, it’s actually not about just adding up our results. Life is about so much more than this!!! It’s about who we are, and who we become, on the way to these results.
Your Dad, the Magician by Elina Svitolina | The Players’ TribuneBecause your dad, in just one shot, one moment, he could achieve what I think few athletes ever achieve. He could make people feel something
Your Dad, the Magician by Elina Svitolina | The Players’ TribuneWhen you become a parent, you meet your child. And then you meet your child again. And again, every day after that. You will never stop meeting your child. That is one reason to become a parent: To have a child is to fall in love with a thousand beautiful strangers.
On Being a Dad - Derek Thompsonif you’re at the frontier, your bottleneck isn’t coding agents — it’s tastemakers. the state of being “the best through subtractive taste,”
claude code is not making your product better↑ but at a cost: they make your circle bigger. the codebase grows faster than the quality does. the technical debt compounds. you’re buying speed with money you’ll pay later.
claude code is not making your product betterthe reward function is compression,
claude code is not making your product bettertinychat (comma.ai‘s software subsidiary) famously had an alarm that triggered when the codebase exceeded a certain size. they celebrated deleted code. the reasoning is straightforward once you understand what software actually is: every line is a surface for bugs. every function is a dependency for the next function. every feature creates neighbors.
claude code is not making your product betterthe best engineering cultures treat lines of code as something you spend, not something you produce. you spend them on the features that matter. you refuse to spend them on the features that don’t. the codebase is a liability on your balance sheet, not an asset.
claude code is not making your product betterShould I go to this social event, even though I'm feeling tired? (1) says yes. I don't trust my tiredness — I'm wary it is a low set point of sadness that my mind is overcorrecting towards — so I overrule it by biasing towards action.
Do Thing, Do One Thingthough we could become learned by other men’s learning, a man can never be wise but by his own wisdom
Infinite midwitUntil then, however, squishy problems will require squishy humans.
Infinite midwitThe story of human struggle is not about to end with a literal deus ex machina. For better or worse, we’ll need to keep thinking.
Infinite midwitI think all of us suffer from this bottleneck blindness: we assume our current bottleneck is our only bottleneck.
Infinite midwitYou have to live in that in between phase when one identity is gone but the new one isn’t quite formed. It’s this phase that most people run away from back towards the safety and predictability of the well-worn path
I burned down my social life and started againI’ve come up with the thesis that you can bucket New Yorkers into two categories: those who consume the city, and those who create it
I burned down my social life and started againStaving off death is a thing that you have to work at… If living things didn’t work actively to prevent it, they would eventually merge into their surroundings, and cease to exist as autonomous beings. That is what happens when they die
Alfred Lin on X: "Be Distinctive & Don't Die" / Xliving organism ceases to expend energy to maintain its distinct state, it drifts toward equilibrium with its environment. Companies are no different. If we stop actively shaping who we are, the world shapes us.
Alfred Lin on X: "Be Distinctive & Don't Die" / Xthe agent needs that is currently only in your head accessible to tools you use through legacy ways (e.g. web UIs)? how can you make the things you care about testable? observable? legible? the goal is to arrange the thing so that you can put agents into longer loops and remove yourself as the bottleneck. "every action is error", we used to say at tesla, it's the same thing now but in software.
Andrej Karpathy on X: "@rkobylinski "Last year" very possible you're holding it wrong. UI: should be a lot more tractable with /chrome etc. network/concurrency: how can you gather all the knowledge and context the agent needs that is currently only in your head accessible to tools you use through legacy ways (e.g." / XEconomic inputs are becoming more abundant, which means that more value will flow to the scarce complementary assets
Power in the Age of Intelligenceidentify the Schwerpunkt in an existing industry, break it, seize High Ground, integrate outward, dominate.
Power in the Age of Intelligencewhich is the kind of split you put in place if you believe your winners are going to keep winning.
Power in the Age of IntelligenceI want to say that thinking and reflection are not good in and of themselves. They are only good to the extent that they lead to good action. And it is possible to waste a lot of time reflecting.
Reflections on Father's DayPeople undervalue the cost of inaction (not moving cities, staying in bad relationships), wishing they had done it sooner or at all
Career Advice That Doesn’t SuckConsider yourself lucky if you go through your entire life and have a single semi-original, non-retarded thought.
Derivative Work Level NotesThe status and compensation afforded to third derivative work proves that the world is dying for good ideas.
Derivative Work Level NotesContext comes from difficulty, exposure, and stakes. Hate to break it to you, but there's no shortcuts.
Why do people who get paid the most do the least? The goal is to get traction and stop getting blocked on an empty page.
Optimize for momentumDon't wait for the perfect idea or the right mood. Act first. Clarity comes after. If a task feels intimidating, cut it down until it becomes trivial.
Optimize for momentumSo the trick is to design your workflow around staying in motion.
Optimize for momentumProgress comes from motion. Momentum is the invisible engine of any significant work. A project feels daunting when you face it as a blank page. It feels easier when you built some momentum with some next steps. So, momentum makes the difference between blocked and flowing
Optimize for momentumThe obvious irony of ‘What the Flip?’ is that Grindr, by its nature, encourages its users to divide the world into those who are and those who are not viable sexual objects according to crude markers of identity
Amia Srinivasan · Does anyone have the right to sex? · LRB 22 March 2018Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice
Amia Srinivasan · Does anyone have the right to sex? · LRB 22 March 2018So I ask them: Would you like to create a second one together?
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticI often say to my patients that if they could bring into their marriage even one-tenth of the boldness, the playfulness, and the verve that they bring to their affair, their home life would feel quite different.
Why Happy People Cheat - The Atlantic“You think you had a relationship with Truck Man,” I tell her. “Actually, you had an intimate encounter with yourself, mediated by him. I don’t expect you to believe me right now, but you can terminate your relationship and keep some of what it gave you. You reconnected with an energy, a youthfulness. I know that it feels as if, in leaving him, you are severing a lifeline to all of that, but I want you to know that over time you will find that the otherness you crave also lives inside you.”
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticBut that’s precisely where the power of transgression lies: in risking the very things that are most dear to us.
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticAs children, we have the opportunity to play at other roles; as adults, we often find ourselves confined by the ones we’ve been assigned or the ones we have chosen.
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticSometimes when we seek the gaze of another, it’s not our partner we are turning away from, but the person we have become. We are not looking for another lover so much as another version of ourselves. The Mexican essayist Octavio Paz described eroticism as a “thirst for otherness.” So often, the most intoxicating “other” that people discover in an affair is not a new partner; it’s a new self.
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticHer story echoes a theme that has come up repeatedly in my work: affairs as a form of self-discovery, a quest for a new (or lost) identity.
Why Happy People Cheat - The Atlantic“It makes me feel alive.”
Why Happy People Cheat - The Atlantic“I love my wife/my husband. We are best friends and happy together,” and then say: “But I am having an affair.”
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticWe still want everything the traditional family was meant to provide—security, respectability, property, and children—but now we also want our partner to love us, to desire us, to be interested in us.
Why Happy People Cheat - The Atlanticmarriage is no longer an economic enterprise but rather a companionate one
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticFor much of history, and in many parts of the world today, marriage was a pragmatic alliance that ensured economic stability and social cohesion.
Why Happy People Cheat - The AtlanticShe wasn’t sure that she was ready for divorce. The women in her circle who had found rich husbands “will absolutely stay with them,” she said, even if these husbands openly cheated or had families with their lovers.
