Courtesy Kelly Heaton Studio I n August 2020, amid COVID-19 lockdowns, George Floyd protests, and conspiracy theories that the entire U.S. electoral system was a sham, the University of Chicago political scientist John Mark Hansen took to socially distanced videoconferencing to deliver a public lecture entitled “American Politics Before and After Trump.” His mood was weirdly serene. According to Hansen, Donald Trump and MAGA were nothing exceptional when viewed in light of what political scientists call the “fundamentals”: “structural factors” such as economic conditions, partisan affiliation, and incumbency.
