“Who Goes Nazi?” In 1941, journalist Dorothy Thompson asked that question about the guests at a hypothetical American cocktail party. She assured the readers of Harper’s magazine that her reporting in Europe had given her a keen eye for “the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers.” And those who would never, as long as they live, go Nazi.
