Emergent Garden explores the complex, lifelike patterns emerging from simple simulated environments. The video examines different evolutionary algorithms and computational techniques, such as cellular automata, to understand how virtual life mimics biological processes and the ongoing challenges researchers face in achieving open-ended evolution within computer-generated worlds. Can you simulate life? Sure. ~ In this video I talk about the field of artificial life while exploring a variety of programs that simulate evolution and life-like behaviors. We take a tour from genetic algorithms to evolution simulations to emergent alife. I try to bring some useful concepts and categories to the conversation, like Darwinian replicators and implicit vs explicit design. I highlight the work of many, many people in the field, and give a brief history of the journey towards open-ended evolution. Special thanks to Akarsh Kumar and Bert Chan for helping with the Lenia…
