In Sodome et Gomorrhe, he referenced Charles Darwin’s book on the forms of flowers, which exhibit various reproductive morphologies to avoid self-fertilisation. Proust used these floral peculiarities to create imagery and arguments that would normalise the amorous inclinations of his characters, many of whom are homosexual.
