Overture For the first fifteen years of my reading life, whenever someone asked me who my favorite novelist was, I would tell them Tolstoy, because I’d read Anna Karenina. Now I am inclined to say it is Proust. I finished In Search of Lost Time a few weeks ago, and can’t stop thinking about it. This is surprising. I read Book 1, Swann’s Way, a few years ago and although I liked it very much, I didn’t see why it was all the way up to the pinnacle of literature. I’m
