Much ink has been spilled on the potential for AI to revolutionize national security use cases.1 In September 2023, the CIA announced that it had developed its own version of ChatGPT, and in early June 2024, the US Air Force released NIPRGPT, an experimental project to leverage generative AI on the Non-classified Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet), the Department of Defense’s (DoD) unclassified intranet service. Overall, U.S. military expenditure on AI surged nearly threefold from 2022 to 2023. While the opportunities for startups to participate are immense, major challenges persist in deploying their leading-edge technology in the DoD and intelligence community (IC).
