"What's the point?" is a common question I get asked when I talk to folks in tech about AI in software development. When I was starting out my career, companies were going from customer on-prem to SaaS and engineers then had similar questions. Then I saw the same thing repeat when we went from centralized data centers / Colo to public clouds like AWS. I think for a vast majority of software developers, the right question isn't "what's the point?", but rather "what does success mean for me now?". This is a subtle mind-shift from pessimism to cautious optimism. Spend a day or two to identify parts you are willing to give up control over, not just at your current level but also the level you want to get to in 2-3 years. Hopefully this is something that sets you up for success in 2026. Happy new year!
