I spent the last two weeks in NYU Professor @ScottGalloway’s strategy sprint — breaking down winning strategies behind today’s most valuable firms, applying these strategies to businesses, and assessing different industries for their algorithm of success. As a culmination of my learnings, I chose to evaluate my favourite company, Shopify, using the T-Algorithm framework to identify strategic opportunities. Shopify is a Canadian company that started as an out-of-the-box solution for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to launch their own e-commerce stores. Sixteen years after its founding, Shopify has dominated the eCommerce space and has disrupted industries beyond just retail. To put it into perspective, Shopify powers more than 1M businesses around the world, has $17.40B in gross merchandise value making it the second-largest retailer (behind Amazon) and is now worth $96.76B.
