Many teachers have made this one phrase, ‘not knowing is most intimate,’ the heart of their teaching, repeating it over and over again. But what does it mean and how can we make use of it for our lives? Dizang asked Fayan, "Where are you going?" Fayan said, "Around on pilgrimage." Dizang said, "What is the purpose of pilgrimage?" Fayan said, "I don't know." Dizang said, "Not knowing is most intimate." This is one of the greatest teaching stories in all of Zen. Many teachers have made this one phrase, "not knowing is most intimate," the heart of their teaching, repeating it over and over again.
