How big is social media? Big enough that the white space below your Instagram profile picture has been turned into a battleground worth billions of dollars. That is in no small part thanks to Melbourne’s Linktree. Founded in 2016, when Instagram only allowed one link in a user’s bio, the company’s business revolves around linking people from the Meta-owned social networking app to the outside internet. And it’s a big business: It was valued at US$1.3 billion in March 2022, when it last raised capital from investors including Australia's Airtree Ventures. Yet just a month later many proclaimed the unicorn would lose its horn and more. Instagram announced it would permit its users to place up to five links in their bio, leading punters and publications like Wired Magazine to question whether that would prove fatal for Linktree and its competitors, like Lnk.Bio and Beacons. Not yet. Rather, co-founder Alex Zaccaria told Capital Brief Instagram’s change has worked out in Linktree’s favour.
