Using Data — Data, Information, and Knowledge | Dataquest
Previously, we described data as raw material, meaning that we use it to produce something else. For example, think of a single datum or piece of data, like 15. On its own, 15 has no meaning. It could be the length or weight of something, a price, a test score, a wage, a temperature, or just about anything! Here, 15 is simply data — as long as it represents some recorded measurement or observation. However, it lacks context. We don’t know what it refers to or what the unit of measurement is (euros, inches, kilograms, degrees Celsius, % correct, etc.). When we learn that 15 is the number of years since DQ Health employee number 58 last received a promotion, our data instantly becomes information. This is because context has joined the data. One way to understand information, as compared to data, is that information describes the data according to who, what, when, how much, and/or where.
