A term we use quite frequently to talk about data is variable. In everyday life, we understand it to mean something that is likely to vary or change. For example, weather can be quite variable because it can be hot, cold, sunny, rainy, snowy, windy, etc. With respect to data, we often use the term variable as a noun. A variable is a category of information that is likely to vary among the many observations within a dataset. When working with tabular data, a variable is also referred to as a field or a column. Look at the data in the HR_Employee_Attrition dataset to the right. Each column of data is a variable. In other words, there aren't any columns in the data where the value is the same for every employee. For example, Department is a variable, and the employees in this dataset come from either Sales, Research & Development, or Human Resources. The opposite of a variable is a constant.
