Metaepistemology (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Whereas epistemology is (broadly speaking) the philosophical theory of knowledge, its nature and scope, metaepistemology takes a step back from particular substantive debates in epistemology in order to inquire into the assumptions and commitments made by those who engage in these debates. This entry will focus on a selection of these assumptions and commitments, including (§1) whether (or not) there are objective epistemic facts; and how to characterize (§2) the subject matter and (§3) the methodology of epistemology. One dividing line in metaepistemology is broadly analogous to a familiar dividing line in metaethics, between (roughly) realist and anti-realist positions. This section will discuss several prominent realist and anti-realist positions in metaepistemology and, in some cases, we will note connections between these positions and their metaethical counterparts (see also entry on metaethics).
