Making good decisions is hard. The process of decision-making also might feel hard to learn because it’s so situational. No two decisions are exactly the same. But by making many, many decisions, I’ve learned a few heuristics to help make them better, faster, and with less drama. The most important one is this: My memory is full of anecdotes — things I experienced, things I was taught, and advice from mentors. Crucial lessons all. Only some of it actually happened. I think that’s probably ok — I’ve adapted lessons to make them fit with my experience over time. The anecdotes themselves tend to adapt right alongside. The details may be slightly different but I’m still powerfully influenced by these things. So here’s a hugely influential anecdote, told to me by a former manager and mentor. I double checked the story with him recently and found that, sure enough, the details and the meaning have evolved from his telling.
