How does AI impact my job as a programmer? – Chelsea Troy
Just before the final week of each quarter at the University of Chicago, I ask students what they would like our final session to cover. This spring, a third of my students submitted some version of the question: “How can I use ChatGPT to get ahead in my programming job?” I had devoted 90 minutes of our second session to discussing how generative large language models perform on various tasks. We then spent about 90 minutes of our sixth session discussing their data privacy and data ethics concerns. The popularity of this question didn’t derive from my class having ignored the topic; my class isn’t even about this topic, and we had so far spent 12% of our session time on it. I don’t think any amount of having already discussed this question would have precluded interest in more of it in the final class. It’s not students’ fault.
