如果說「現代化」這個東西是現代人「認同」的基本元素的話，接受日本殖民現代化教育的台灣一般知識菁英，與經過辛亥、五四與抗戰的中國大陸一般知識菁英，在現代認同上就有了基本的歧異，雙方缺乏互相的理解。這個歧異無關左右之分，而是民族內部的。

換言之，台灣原來的抗日志士在日本殖民政府嚴厲鎮壓之後，或者噤聲，或者被關在監獄裡，不然就是投奔祖國參加抗戰。如此在台灣還能發聲的，當然就主要是那批接受殖民式現代化教育的新興中間階層的新社會菁英了，這一批人對後來台灣的社會心理影響很大。
