Such a division between a world of essential qualities (matter, form, shape and substance) and one of secondary qualities (colour, sound, taste, emotion, thought and so on) is what the philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead, in the 1920s, called the ‘bifurcation of nature’.
