A rule of thumb when deriving variational formulations is that one tries to keep the order of derivatives of 𝑢 and 𝑣 as small as possible.
Solving the Poisson equation — FEniCSx tutorialMuch of the community has converged on the principle that we should be studying new methods for consuming data, for which there are two leading paradigms: (1) next-token prediction and (2) reinforcement learning. (Apparently, we have not made great progress on new paradigms :)
The Only Important Technology Is The Internet — Kevin LuSo we should pick the method which is best for inference, which may well be some subquadratic attention variant
The Only Important Technology Is The Internet — Kevin LuBut the data-bound regime is freeing: all our methods are going to perform the same anyway!
The Only Important Technology Is The Internet — Kevin Lu-- Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible. -- Richard Feynman
Jui-Hsien WangWith robots we can play with the body and the tools. More possibilities, more freedom, more fun.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonThe gripper is itself a tool, and in some use cases it is switched in and out
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. Masoncertain tasks that can be performed by hands may not be possible with any known tool
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. Masondexterous hands are versatile tool changing systems
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonWheels are one of the most celebrated inventions of humanity, and for good reason. They are simple, light, rugged, and inexpensive, like vacuum grippers. They require a minimum of motors and sensors, like vacuum grippers. The case for wheels is remarkably similar to the case for vacuum grippers.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonSome vacuum systems do require a seal, but not all. In fact, you probably have some in your own home — your vacuum cleaner, DustBuster, Roomba, and Shop-Vac all pick things up without a seal. True, the usual vacuum cleaner is tuned for picking up tiny things, but if you have played with a Shop-Vac you know it can do more. In fact, the winners of the first Amazon Picking Challenge used a Shop-Vac-style vacuum source.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonIn short, reproducing the capabilities of the human hand is a grand research project, to be supported and celebrated. But it is still a research project, and nobody knows when or if it might lead to practical robotic hands.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonScientists and roboticists are still trying to catalog the vast number of human hand behaviors.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonBeyond performance, the comparison is quite easy. If the robot hand designs copy the human hand, they will have: Five fingers, Three joints per finger for a total of 15, Four expensive servomotors per finger for a total of 20, An additional joint and motor in the palm, Tens of thousands of tactile sensors.
Vacuum grippers versus robot hands - Matthew T. MasonRe general purpose household robots. I am not sure I believe in such robots at all. As an engineer, or a wannabe-engineer, I am disturbed by the idea of working on such a poorly stated problem. We cannot figure out how to describe the problem, so instead we try to copy an existing solution.
