Instead of taking notes to use as direct references, make notes that can serve as prompts for further research
Motivation and Mindset | The Odin ProjectWe still have languages, but they went from compiled to interpreted.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyThe fact that “programming” is getting closer and closer to human language, that our machines can understand us rather than us having to speak to them in their native tongue of 0s and 1s, or some specialized programming language pidgin, should be cause for celebration.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyIt took just about as long for an apprentice craftsman to reach the full wages of a skilled journeyman as it did for one of the new entry-level unskilled factory workers to reach full pay and productivity. The workers in both regimes were actually skilled workers. But they had different kinds of skills.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyThere are still a few programmers who write compilers, thousands who write popular JavaScript frameworks and Python libraries, but tens of millions who write web and mobile applications and the backend software that enables them. Billions of users consume what they produce.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyYet this explosion of internet sites and the network protocols and APIs connecting them ended up creating the need for more programmers.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’Reillyas software was easier to create, its price fell, allowing developers to create solutions that more people were willing to pay for.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyBig data, web services, and cloud computing established a kind of “internet operating system.
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyThe first programmers connected physical circuits to perform each calculation. They were succeeded by programmers writing machine instructions as binary code to be input one bit at a time by flipping switches on the front of a computer
The End of Programming as We Know It – O’ReillyThe resolution operation is a simple find/replace operation.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)The variables mentioned in the head (the one tagged for replacement) are called bound variables. Unmentioned variables are free variables. Because functions can be part of other functions, a variable may be both bound and free in the same expression.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)The resolution of functions is the only thing we can ever do in the Lambda Calculus. Once we have gotten rid of all the lambdas, or if there are no more expressions after the remaining functions, we cannot replace anything any more. We can go home now.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)Having done that, we throw the head away, because it has served its purpose: telling us which variable to replace.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)The resolution works by taking the variable mentioned in the head, and replacing all of its occurrences within the body with the expression after the function
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)All variables are lambda terms (a valid expression in the lambda calculus)
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)It just stands there. The only thing we can do with it is to resolve it.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)Variables do not stand for anything. They are just empty names.
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)The λ does not have any complicated meaning: it just says that a function starts here
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)With λ and the dot, we can write functions. A function starts always with the λ and a variable, followed by a dot, and then comes an expression
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)Parentheses: ( ). Parentheses can be used to indicate that some part of an expression belongs together
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)Single letters (like a, b, c, d...), which are called variables
Palmström: The Lambda Calculus for Absolute Dummies (like myself)Nearly every new, exemplary capital city has, as the inevitable accompaniment of its official structures, given rise to another, far more ‘disorderly’ and complex city that makes the official city work — that is virtually a condition of its existence
Seeing like a StateThe planned city, the planned village, and the planned language are, we have emphasized, likely to be thin cities, villages, and languages
Seeing like a Statepeople being on what she calls ‘sidewalk terms’
Seeing like a StateFarmers, being polytheists when it comes to agricultural practice, are quick to seize whatever seems useful from the epistemic work of formal science”
Seeing like a StateThe diversity of species naturally occurring in a tropical setting is, other things being equal, consistently greater than the diversity of species in a temperate setting. An acre of tropical forest will have far more species of plants, although fewer individuals of each species, than will an acre of temperate woodland. Thus unmanaged nature in temperate climates looks more orderly because it is less diverse, and this may play a role in the visual culture of Westerners.”
