Your best format lives at the intersection of what you love and what only you can do. If you wouldn’t hire yourself to make it, your audience probably won’t stick around to watch it.
GmailViral is nice. Repeatable is powerful. If your idea can become a series, you're building a business - not just catching lightning.
Gmail“YouTube is not predictable, like it’s going to do this exact thing every month, right?,” he said. “It’s volatile.”
Startup That Bet on YouTube Stars Misses Financial Goals, Slashes Staff - BloombergMost of that money is flowing to technology giants and the creators who upload the videos – not the companies that sit in between.
Startup That Bet on YouTube Stars Misses Financial Goals, Slashes Staff - BloombergSpotter’s struggles belie a creator economy that is still booming. The people who post videos, promote products and otherwise influence others on social media sites like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram could generate $480 billion in sales by 2027, according to Goldman Sachs & Co.
Startup That Bet on YouTube Stars Misses Financial Goals, Slashes Staff - BloombergIn March, the company hosted an event modeled after the television industry’s upfronts, where marketers can commit to purchase ads on YouTube videos in advance. Video creators or their teams, including MrBeast, Kinigra Deon, Dude Perfect and Ryan Trahan presented to brands such as Amazon.com Inc., Uber Technologies Inc. and Walt Disney Co. But nearly a month after the event, at least two creators in attendance saw no deals come out of the showcase.
Startup That Bet on YouTube Stars Misses Financial Goals, Slashes Staff - BloombergYet the boom in the creator economy has made it harder for Spotter to close deals with some big partners. Many creators, including MrBeast and Dude Perfect, started to make enough money on a consistent basis that traditional investors, be they venture capitalists or banks, wanted to lend them money. The creators no longer needed Spotter.
Startup That Bet on YouTube Stars Misses Financial Goals, Slashes Staff - BloombergThe house always wins, you know? But what happens when the house is everywhere? In your pocket, your feed, your brain. And what kind of society are we building if it’s powered by our worst instincts?
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskWe are all living in the experimental phase of an economy built on extracting value from human psychological vulnerability6. We've built a democracy that literally depends on citizen irrationality for some parts of revenue, then wonder why our political discourse feels increasingly unmoored from reality. Everyone is responding to incentives, all of the time. But the incentives are increasingly misaligned.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskI don’t know much, but what I do know is that sports betting isn't really about sports betting. It's about what happens when we reduce all friction and turn uncertainty into a profit center.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskKyle and Ryan are both guinea pigs4 for what happens when every dopamine pathway becomes monetized.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskIt's going to have to be gambling literacy and porn literacy and AI literacy and deep fake literacy. There's just going to be a whole new world. I do think the 25 to 35-year-old range is a guinea pig for all of this stuff.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to Riska nation of beta testers. It’s a generation of beta testers.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskGambling addiction is the addiction most closely associated with suicide compared to every other directly, formally categorized addictive behavior in the diagnostic and statistical manuals. And this is what sparked the—we'll call it a reckoning—over gambling policy and over legalizing online gambling in the United Kingdom: a wave of suicides of young men who had developed gambling addiction."
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskThere have always been Kyles in American history, but never has the government and corporations made it so easy to have that exact experience and to have it from their couch.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskTraditional gambling required physical presence, social interaction, choice. The current system eliminates all friction, all social context, all natural stopping points.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskI'd love to actually talk about the phrase, please play responsibly. I think each of those three words is so interesting. It's like the warning labels on cigarettes, which is just ingeniously worded and so insidiously worded. It's like “Okay, please Kyle, I'm asking you to play responsibly. Putting the onus on you as a result to be the one in charge of your own play.” They can't even say the word gamble! It's not even please gamble responsibly! It's like play. It's fun, it's light, it's easy. This is not gambling, it's just playing. And then responsibly, same thing. I think the true function o…
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskPolling indicates that pluralities of young men between the ages of 18 to 35 say this has happened to them at least once: that they've been unable to pay one of their bills because of gambling losses. If it's happening to that many people, there's clearly some phenomenon going on, something that is rooted in both gender and society.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskStates become stakeholders in an industry built on extracting money from their own citizens. The worse people like Kyle get at gambling, the more money the state makes.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskBut the only reason we have lotteries in the first place is because lawmakers and taxpayers wasted their impossible dreams of a tax free bonanza for the state on a lottery ticket.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskRed and blue lawmakers alike have shown that they're just total suckers when it comes to gambling revenue. They'll just say yes to anything because it seems too good to pass up.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskCultural normalization via two screens is only half the equation. For sports betting to become infrastructure, it needed political legitimacy.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskThe 30,000 foot level goal is the normalization of sports gambling - or even the normalization of just a second screen experience where you're watching TV over there and you have your phone open with your sportsbook open on the same side. All advertising is meant to build familiarity and enthusiasm for the brand, but it’s also as much about just normalizing this activity.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskA lot of people were not gambling before 2018. It was too scandalous. It was too hard to access. You had to buy Bitcoin and transfer the Bitcoin to cash and then gamble with that. But now you can just use your phone, use your debit card, use your PayPal account and they are trying to normalize that.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskBehavioral Design: The platforms are engineered to exploit overconfidence, dopamine, and a lack of friction - especially among young men. Institutional Complicity: States, media, and markets helped normalize betting not by accident, but as a way to collect revenue.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskWe were talking about how a society decides what kinds of human weaknesses are acceptable to monetize, and how quickly something can go from scandal to infrastructure when there's money to be made.
Gamblemerica: How Sports Betting Apps Rewired a Generation's Relationship to RiskBoth of us have an intense conviction that this technology can usher in an age of human flourishing the likes of which we have never seen before. But we are equally convinced that progress will usher in a crisis about what it is to be human at all.
How to Survive Artificial IntelligenceBut I think the ultimate source of this problem is that ideas are tree-shaped and essays are linear.
Good WritingBetter sounding writing is more likely to be internally consistent. If the writer is honest, internal consistency and truth converge.
Good WritingIt's only when you're writing to develop ideas that there's such a close connection between the two senses of doing it well.
Good WritingSo when an essay sounds good, it's not merely because it has a pleasing rhythm, but because it has its natural one. Which means you can use getting the rhythm right as a heuristic for getting the ideas right.
Good WritingAn essay is a cleaned up train of thought, in the same way dialogue is cleaned up conversation, and a train of thought has a natural rhythm.
Good Writingmathematics, the science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects. It deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation, and its development has involved an increasing degree of idealization and abstraction of its subject matter. Since the 17th century, mathematics has been an indispensable adjunct to the physical sciences and technology, and in more recent times it has assumed a similar role in the quantitative aspects of the life sciences.

This week in creators, content, and crypto (Mar 23-29)It's hard when you're young to think about both what you want and why you want it, and to really interrogate the why. But it's also important. The longer you go without doing that, the harder life gets no matter your success.
The Mr. Beast Memo is a Guide to the Gen Z WorkforcePlatform communities provide a clear audience for creators to bring their content, and a gathering place for consumers with shared interests. Deloitte found that 77% of consumers follow creators either out of a shared interest or hobby or desire to learn something new—indicating that creator followership is largely interest-driven and an incentive for platforms to help creators capitalize on these interest-based communities.
Creator Economy in 3D: The Platform’s Place in a Shifting Media Landscape | Deloitte USConnecting with friends is consumers’ third priority, after format and variety of content. For most consumers, personal peer groups are the main priority in platform, but Deloitte found a stark generational shift in how consumers look to social media for community (figure 4)
Creator Economy in 3D: The Platform’s Place in a Shifting Media Landscape | Deloitte USI get a lot of questions about how much time it takes to make an 11 minute animated show. I also see a lot of misinformation on the internet about how they’re made. So I thought I would show you all this flowchart I created to explain to my grandmother how the show actually functions behind the scenes. This is not how all animated shows work, but it’s how a lot of them work. It changes depending on the studio, your timeline, the style of animation you’re doing, where the animation is being produced, etc.
