Anki use is best thought of as a virtuoso skill, to be developed
Augmenting Long-term MemoryIt's nearly always possible to read deeper into a paper, but that doesn't mean you can't easily be getting more value elsewhere. It's a failure mode to spend too long reading unimportant papers.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryIt’s also a fantastic way to convince yourself that unpreparedness is what’s between you and creative work. If you believe you’re unprepared, know that you will never transmute into the perfectly prepared person that you think exists in the future.
Notes Against Note-Taking Systems - by Sasha ChapinThis is a government app loading code from a random person's GitHub Pages.
I Decompiled the White House's New AppAn official United States government app is injecting CSS and JavaScript into third-party websites to strip away their cookie consent dialogs, GDPR banners, login gates, and paywalls.
I Decompiled the White House's New AppWe wanted machines that could understand us.
It's Alive! | WIRED"If FocalPoint kept learning 'in the wild,' its performance would vary depending on the skill of the lab tech who was teaching it." Which is to say, a lousy technician could undermine an already smart program
It's Alive! | WIREDFinding the one relevant detail in a sea of information may be the human brain's most useful talent.
It's Alive! | WIREDBut a commuter can handle only so many variables before getting overwhelmed.
It's Alive! | WIRED"Every time we figure out a piece of it, it stops being magical; we say, 'Oh, that's just a computation,'"
It's Alive! | WIRED"Intelligence," we discovered belatedly, leaned heavily on the shared experience of being alive and sentient in a physical world.
It's Alive! | WIREDsomeone who never writes has no fully formed ideas about anything nontrivial
How to think in writing - by Henrik KarlssonWhat is the half-life of doomscrolling dopamine?
Things That Outlive Fancy RatsIt’s the thought that we don’t need the self in order to pursue the things that matter to us, and that this pursuit is the best indicator of who we are.
On Rejecting Narrative Identity | Are.na EditorialAt the same time, I’m beginning to explore something I’ll tentatively call discursive identity: a way of seeing and presenting yourself as dispersed across all that you say and do.
On Rejecting Narrative Identity | Are.na EditorialBut in focusing on bundle sizes as a foremost consideration, I can’t help but feel that people are taking broken infrastructure for granted, without examining the root causes of that infrastructure failure
Small Websites & Internet Infrastructure ⁑ Wesley’s NotebookIn a 2003 presentation at an open source convention, Yukihiro Matsumoto, creator of the programming language Ruby, said that one of his inspirations for developing the language was the science fiction novel Babel-17, based on the Whorf Hypothesis.[
Linguistic relativitySystems such as Anki are challenging to use well, and easy to use poorly.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryDon't, in short, come down with a bad case of programmer's efficiency disease. Learn how to use Anki for basic question and answer, and concentrate on exploring new patterns within that paradigm.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryI make it a rule to never put in one question. Rather, I try to put at least two questions in, preferably three or more. That's usually enough that it's at least the nucleus of a bit of useful knowledge. If it's a lonely orphan, inevitably I get the question wrong all the time, and it's a waste to have entered it at all.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryAnki skills concretely instantiate your theory of how you understand; developing those skills will help you understand better.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryMy questions about AlphaGo began with simple questions such as “How large is a Go board?”, and ended with high-level conceptual questions about the design of the AlphaGo systems – on subjects such as how AlphaGo avoided over-generalizing from training data, the limitations of convolutional neural networks, and so on.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryPut another way: if a paper is so uninteresting that it's not possible to add 5 good questions about it, it's usually better to add no questions at all.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryDoes the article seem likely to contain substantial insight or provocation relevant to my project – new questions, new ideas, new methods, new results? If so, I'll have a read.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryWhen I made mistakes with the combined question, I was often a little fuzzy about where exactly my mistake was. That meant I didn't focus sharply enough on the mistake, and so didn't learn as much from my failure. When I fail with the atomic questions my mind knows exactly where to focus.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryI start to identify open problems, questions that I'd personally like answered, but which don't yet seem to have been answered.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryShallow reads of many papers can help you figure out what the key papers are, without spending too much time doing deeper reads of papers that turn out not to be so important.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryStudy hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible. – Richard Feynman
Augmenting Long-term MemoryDevotional, technical, documentary, and literary texts appear side by side in no discernible order.
Commonplace book"A collection without order, drawn from many papers, which I have copied here, hoping to arrange them later each in its place, according to the subjects of which they treat."
Commonplace bookthe commonplace book could be a repository of intellectual references
Commonplace bookCommonplaces are used by readers, writers, students, and scholars as an aid for remembering useful concepts or facts
Commonplace bookYou made one thing work one time on one computer.
The Problem with “Vibe Coding” : dylanbeattie.netThe code is just a means to an end. The result is what matters.
The Problem with “Vibe Coding” : dylanbeattie.netTo me, programs are “works on my machine” code. The kind of things many of us crank out a few times every week. Experiments, prototypes… that script you hacked up to rename all the MP4 files in a folder? You know the one. No error checking. Hard-coded path names.
The Problem with “Vibe Coding” : dylanbeattie.netIt's a bit goofy, but that is what makes personal websites special. You get to experiment with it and make it yours.
My phone's battery has been blogging for 7 years | Dries BuytaertCan we move beyond merely facilitating connection to building solidarity?
touching computers - by Spencer Chang - spencer's paradoxesI want tangible computing devices that can be as commonplace and ubiquitous as the flyers that plaster telephone poles across cities.
touching computers - by Spencer Chang - spencer's paradoxesCompared to augmented reality, tangible computing is: an inherently shared experience because it involves enchanting physical objects that everyone can see rather than individual technological overlays
touching computers - by Spencer Chang - spencer's paradoxesI want computing that brings people together where they already are, rather than more advanced and convenient ways of immersing into digital realities.
touching computers - by Spencer Chang - spencer's paradoxesI want there to be more different communities on different platforms with different vibes and rules and expectations. Trying to compress my identity into a single site is the antithesis of that.
IndieWeb Thoughts: POSSE ⁑ Wesley’s Notebookthe POSSE model of posting on a personal site pushes people towards a more individualist view of the web, rather than fostering small, situated communities
IndieWeb Thoughts: POSSE ⁑ Wesley’s NotebookThe technology, too, has been influenced by this — towering gobs of senseless javascript everywhere, no one truly understanding how modern webapps work.
IndieWeb Thoughts: POSSE ⁑ Wesley’s Notebooklogical properties feel much more like working with the grain of the web
Adactio: Journal—Making the Patterns Day websiteIt felt like I was getting my hands into the soil of the web. I don’t think it’s an accident that the result turned out to be very performant.
Adactio: Journal—Making the Patterns Day websiteI could’ve kept tinkering but the diminishing returns were a sign that it was time to put this out into the world.
Adactio: Journal—Making the Patterns Day websitewhen it comes to how the content is going to behave on the World Wide Web, nothing beats a browser for fidelity.
Adactio: Journal—Making the Patterns Day websiteI’m not sure it’s possible to engineer that kind of serendipity in Figma.
Adactio: Journal—Making the Patterns Day websiteBy this point, I felt like I was truly designing in the browser.
