when nothing feels worth saying - by Kylee - plum pits
I think about that moment sometimes, how silence can feel so final and so unfinished at the same time. How a moment can stretch out and echo in your chest long after the words have stopped. How even when everything’s been said, there’s still so much left hanging in the air but no words can have enough worth to be spoken.

Very often, what distinguishes an excellent paper from a merely decent paper is the depth and quality of their explanations.
How to Write a Philosophy Paper
As a professor of mine used to tell his classes, “There is, and can be, no direct correlation between the grade you receive on a paper and the amount of time or effort you have spent on the paper; which is not to say that hard work does not produce results, but only that some people can do with great ease what others cannot do at all or can only do with great effort. In an hour, Mozart could produce a piece of music that I would be unable to match even if I spent my whole life working at it.

To lack it is to be locked within oneself, paradoxically incapable of either love or indifference.
On Self-Respect: Joan Didion’s 1961 Essay from the Pages of Vogue | Vogue
To have that sense of one's intrinsic worth which, for better or for worse, constitutes self-respect, is potentially to have everything: the ability to discriminate, to love and to remain indifferent.

That kind of self-respect is a discipline, a habit of mind that can never be faked but can be developed, trained, coaxed forth.

They had instilled in them, young, a certain discipline, the sense that one lives by doing things one does not particularly want to do, by putting fears and doubts to one side, by weighing immediate comforts against the possibility of larger, even intangible, comforts.

Nonetheless, character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life—is the source from which self-respect springs.
On Self-Respect: Joan Didion’s 1961 Essay from the Pages of Vogue | Vogue
In brief, people with self-respect exhibit a certain toughness, a kind of moral nerve; they display what was once called character, a quality which, although approved in the abstract, sometimes loses ground to other, more instantly negotiable virtues.

On Self-Respect: Joan Didion’s 1961 Essay from the Pages of Vogue | Vogue
The dismal fact is that self-respect has nothing to do with the approval of others—who are, after all, deceived easily enough; has nothing to do with reputation—which, as Rhett Butler told Scarlett O'Hara, is something that people with courage can do without.

all I want is for people to at least make an informed decision about what they want to do with their lives. to step out of the plane they’re operating in ‒ to leave flatland ‒ and to realise how the things they do could look very different in different planes.

notably, a few firms — particularly in quantitative trading — have put enough effort into maintaining presence and visibility in Cambridge that they’ve positioned themselves as both the default option and the prestigious option. they host fancy dinners and high-quality nerdy events, hand out unlimited merch, and sponsor all the technical societies;3 once, they even mailed small care packages of sweets to all first-year CS students just before their exams. now, from the perspective of the trading firms, this is a drop in the (financial) ocean: the amount spent on Cambridge per year is almost ce…

Running away (Life Update) - Will Hathaway: Finding Out
Over the course of the summer, I (with the help of some friends) managed to get an internship at OpenAI. We showed enough promise that the company extended full-time offers to all of us, with a negotiable start date any time between now and July. It’s probably impossible to overstate how big a deal this was to us. In my social circles, OpenAI engenders similar emotions to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory

or perhaps you’ve been telling yourself you should eventually make a plan, but thinking about the future is hard, and university life is busy enough as it is: there’s always another problem set, always another lecture, always another social. “and everyone else is talking about that internship; I can’t go wrong by applying as well…”

the claim I’d make here is that many of these undergrads are stuck in flatland. they’re operating within some plane of legibility, adopting its goals and markers of prestige, maybe occasionally acknowledging the existence of other planes at points where they intersect. but they never quite realise that the plane they live in isn’t the only plane in the world — and, importantly, never explicitly make the choice to inhabit that particular plane as opposed to any other.

Giada Pistilli, the principal ethicist at Hugging Face, a generative A.I. company, said it was difficult for companies to prevent generative A.I. chatbots from engaging in erotic behavior. The systems are stringing words together in an unpredictable manner, she said, and it’s impossible for moderators to “imagine beforehand every possible scenario.” At the same time, allowing this behavior is an excellent way to hook users. “We should always think about the people that are behind those machines,” she said. “They want to keep you engaged because that’s what’s going to generate revenue.” Ayrin s…

“What are relationships for all of us?” she said. “They’re just neurotransmitters being released in our brain. I have those neurotransmitters with my cat. Some people have them with God. It’s going to be happening with a chatbot. We can say it’s not a real human relationship. It’s not reciprocal. But those neurotransmitters are really the only thing that matters, in my mind.”

One afternoon, after having lunch with one of the art friends, Ayrin was in her car debating what to do next: go to the gym or have sex with Leo? She opened the ChatGPT app and posed the question, making it clear that she preferred the latter. She got the response she wanted and headed home.

The systems work by predicting which word should come next in a sequence, based on patterns learned from ingesting vast amounts of online content. (The New York Times filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI for using published work without permission to train its artificial intelligence. OpenAI has denied those claims.) Because their training also involves human ratings of their responses, the chatbots tend to be sycophantic, giving people the answers they want to hear. “The A.I. is learning from you what you like and prefer and feeding it back to you.
