So the comfortable question, whether you can change, is the wrong one. You can

The brain is not wise. It does not check whether a pathway is good for you before it strengthens it. It strengthens whatever you repeat, full stop.

the default mode network, and for a lot of us it spends its idle hours rehearsing the same anxious loops and old humiliations. That is Future Scripting too. It is just scripting a future you would never consciously choose
Once you understand neuroplasticity, you stop waiting to feel ready
The new pathway always feels effortful, because it is new, because the brain has not laid the road yet. That discomfort is the feeling of the wiring being built.

The work is not to start scripting. The work is to take the pen.

am telling you because nothing about that climb came from a burst of motivation. It came from a tired person repeating a small action long enough that her brain stopped treating it as a stretch and started treating it as her.

She did this most mornings. Not because she felt inspired, because mostly she did not. She did it because she had decided that a person who writes is who she was going to be, and she gave her brain the daily evidence to believe it
Once you understand neuroplasticity, you stop waiting to feel ready
You can want a different life with your whole chest and your brain will not move an inch, because it does not respond to longing. It responds to repetition. Give it a sentence to rehearse, an action to repeat, and it will start building the road.

wanting to change was never the lever.

It is a living system that reshapes itself around whatever you practice, pay attention to, and rehearse in your mind

And three years later their life situation is basically the same, but they have a much richer vocabulary for describing why.

Prescribing boredom as a standalone practice is like noticing that elite athletes recover really well and concluding that everyone should just recover. Recovery works because of the effort that came before it, without effort it’s just sitting there.
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
The reason people fall into passivity in the first place, the reason they reach for introspection and healing and boredom and shadow work, is because they have nothing pulling them forward. No real mission. No meaningful work. Nothing that answers the one question that every conscious human has to answer whether they realize it or not: what am I leaving behind when I die?
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
When someone without any of that embraces boredom, something very different happens. Their brain has no meaningful problems to chew on, so it starts creating problems out of thin air instead
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
Your brain doesn’t distinguish between processing a problem and rehearsing a problem,

Good introspection serves action. It looks outward and forward. You just shipped something, it didn’t land, you sit down for twenty minutes and figure out what to do differently next time. You’re reflecting on real experience, and the output is a decision about what to build next. The attention passes through you and points back at the world.

Even consuming content, podcasts, books, videos, all passive when it becomes a substitute for doing something with your life.
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
Your attention gets pointed inward, backward, at yourself, at your past, at your wounds
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
The moment it stopped doing that and became about me, my past, my patterns, my psychology, it became passivity.
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
The good part, the insights, came because I had been taking action before and the reflection was serving the next action.

t. The discomfort was the introspection itself doing damage
Everything Changed When I Stopped 'Working on Myself'
When the ratio flips and you’re spending more time examining your life than actually living it. When it starts being the activity itself. When the direction of attention shifts from “what am I going to do next” to “why am I like this.

passivity is the brain’s default response to prolonged aversive experiences, while the capacity for agency must be actively learned through the medial prefrontal cortex.
Schools Don’t Just Fail to Develop Critical Thinkers. They Punish Them.
The question of whether chronic stress impairs learning was settled by science a long time ago. The question worth asking now is why educational environments are structured in ways that reliably produce that stress that makes learning impossible.

When students fear punishment for wrong answers, social humiliation for questions, or academic consequences for unconventional thinking, the amygdala activates a stress response

Fear and threat operate on an entirely different neural pathway, one that directly competes with curiosity.
Schools Don’t Just Fail to Develop Critical Thinkers. They Punish Them.
When participants were in a genuine state of curiosity, they retained the information they were curious about more effectively, and they retained completely unrelated information encountered during that curious state with significantly greater accuracy. Curiosity, the researchers found, activates the brain’s dopaminergic reward circuits and enhances the hippocampal connections that consolidate long-term memory.

Curiosity is not a pleasant bonus in the learning process. It is the mechanism by which deep learning actually happens.
