We want AI agents that can discover like we can, not which contain what we have discovered.
The Bitter Lessonnstead we should build in only the meta-methods that can find and capture this arbitrary complexity.
The Bitter LessonOne thing that should be learned from the bitter lesson is the great power of general purpose methods, of methods that continue to scale with increased computation even as the available computation becomes very great. The two methods that seem to scale arbitrarily in this way are search and learning.
The Bitter LessonAgain, the statistical methods won out over the human-knowledge-based methods.
The Bitter Lessonthe only thing that matters in the long run is the leveraging of computation.
The Bitter LessonYou need to be around people with compassion and have compassion for yourself.
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. JBut the right people appreciate you for how you are right now and don’t put pressure on you to be “cool” or portray yourself in a way that requires high social status.
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. JObsessing, brooding, and ruminating over it enabled me to get over it
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. JObsessing, brooding, and ruminating over it enabled me to get over it.
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. JI’ve noticed that “give it time” incentivizes avoidance. If you’re feeling bad about something, well, the solution is time. So you should just do something to get your mind off of it and time will heal.
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. Jso you can truly live out every chapter intentionally with no regrets.
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsMy current working theory for the best way to travel is every 6ish months, you spend 2-4 weeks in a small handful or places (to help combat this!) Bonus is that you get periods of time where you can try to pickup the local language and experiment using it while traveling!
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsNot every conversation you have can or will be one of those, but any one of them could be.
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsI’ve found that overthinking is the worst at the start, but once you’re doing the thing, it’s not so bad or scary!
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsthat deep down we know we want to do or should do, but find ways of overthinking our way out of it.
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsI think there’s this misconception that you have to travel to have an “adventurous” or “spontaneous” life, but I genuinely think you can have these types of experiences anywhere you live as long as you learn to approach and talk to people, especially strangers!
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsOften times being in a bubble for a long time de-sensitizes you to this, and it’s easy to feel out of touch with the rest of reality
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsThe average person in the traveler bubble is very “experience-life” oriented - they’re motivated by traveling to see new places, experiencing new things, understanding new cultures etc.
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 months“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart”
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsIn the US, the concept of “work” is the most culturally dominant force in people’s lives, in Europe this is not the case.
Reflecting on backpacking Europe for 2 monthsTalk to strangers! Always be the first that says hello, don’t expect other people to and don’t assume they will and I promise your social experiences will be way more worthwhile.

The Story of Two Wolves - Urban BalanceYou already have everything you need to be happy because you are whole as you are, right now.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban BalanceTrue lasting happiness comes from making an active choice to be happy, rather than depending on external things to make you happy.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban BalanceWe often look to external objects for our fulfillment and happiness. We develop expectations that these things (a new job, a relationship, a lavish vacation, a brand new pair of shoes, a glass of wine, etc.) will finally make us feel the way we want to feel. And while this may bring momentary gratification, it isn’t realistic to maintain this long-term.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban Balancemaking a choice to use your energy and resources on thoughts, feeling, and emotions that serve you in healthy ways.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban Balancea representation of your depression, your anxiety, and your low self-esteem.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban BalanceThat power is lost the moment we become dependent on other people or things to make us feel a certain way.
The Story of Two Wolves - Urban Balanceit’s possible that the direction we’re facing is more a reflection of those structures than it is a reflection of ourselves
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicevery little support for making any deviating choices.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Adviceit’s rare for young people to have substantially departed from supporting frameworks.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicethey have typically made all of their life choices completely within supporting structures.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Adviceafter all, society itself also defines the context of our thoughts, and by now it’s way too late to effectively remove ourselves from that.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceLook at the real people, and you’ll see the honest future for yourself.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceThey are the future you. Do not think that you will be substantially different. Look carefully at how they spend their time at work and outside of work, because this is also almost certainly how your life will look.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceI think the best thing you can do is to ignore all of that and simply observe the older people working there.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceIn the context of a career, these concepts make it simple to look into the future. Jobs at software companies are typically advertised in terms of the difficult problems that need solving, the impact the project will have, the benefits the company provides, the playful color of the bean bag chairs. Likewise, jobs in other fields have their own set of metrics that they use to position themselves within their domains.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicenot because I don’t envy extra leg room, but because I don’t envy the people sitting in them.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicenot because I find them necessarily unenjoyable, but because they add up to something that I ultimately dislike.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicein avoiding them you keep yourself from becoming like the people you hate.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceThe context of one’s life defines not just what but how one thinks, and a job tends to dominate the context of one’s life — particularly when that job is considered to be part of a career. Your job will change you.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career Advicesimpler lesson I draw from it as an individual is just be careful what job you take, because your job will change you.
Moxie Marlinspike >> Blog >> Career AdviceI’m usually concerned that the question itself might be the wrong one to be asking.
