Michael Nielsen, "Building a Better Memory System", https://michaelnotebook/bbms/index.html, San Francisco (2022).
Building a better memory systemMy few most productive individual weeks at Anthropic have all been “crisis project management:” coordinating major, time-sensitive implementation or debugging efforts.
How I've run major projects | benkuhn.netTime is like drinking out of a glass with no bottom. It just goes. Time is returning to your hometown to discover the tree that supported your back on lonely nights and summers has become nothing more but a dull stump. Sliced away like the time you’ll never get back. Time is sitting on that stump and wondering where the hell you fit in in all of it. Envying the wind.
Conversations I Never Had. - by iL. - BluezoneThe uncomfortable truth is that most people don’t give a shit. For example, it’s absolutely shocking that the common paradigm for engineers at big companies is to come in at 11am and leave at 4pm. In no world can you be working 5 hours a day and be giving a shit, and so the conclusion is that very little meaningful work gets done at big companies. Maybe a bit of a hyperbole, but not far from the truth. That culture is broken.
Hire people who give a shit. - by Alexandr WangWhat’s the hardest you’ve ever worked on something? How many hours were you working a week? Why did you work so hard? Why did you care? When were you the most unmotivated in your life? What’s the thing you’re the most proud of? Do you think it was worth it?
Hire people who give a shit. - by Alexandr WangA recruiting team that looks like a college admissions office is certain death for a startup.
Hire people who give a shit. - by Alexandr WangBut as we’ve grown and will continue to grow, it will be more common for people to interview for the brand rather than the substance

Hire people who give a shit. - by Alexandr WangOne very scary thing to me is Scale becoming a credential rather than a cult
Hire people who give a shit. - by Alexandr WangEliminate the bad. I was a Division I athlete in college, and this was something our coach would say to us all the time. Eliminate the bad. In other words, don’t suck. The most basic thing you need to do at any job is simply be competent. This isn’t very hard to achieve, because it’s based on not under-achieving. To get where you’re going, you need to start the car in park, not in reverse. Your boss mostly wants to know that when they tell you to do something, you do it correctly. If you are a pair of “safe hands,” you have a lot of value in the organization. Eliminating the bad means not bein…
How to Make the Most of Your 20s - Catherine ShannonThose kinds of labels can be fun, I guess, but ultimately are limiting. It’s best to take an expansive view of the self.
How to Make the Most of Your 20s - Catherine ShannonSo many conversations these days feel like two egos battling for supreme position, or are extremely pragmatic and boring
How to Make the Most of Your 20s - Catherine ShannonBesides, in the rare case you find a shortcut and it works, you won’t feel you’ve earned the prize.
How to Make the Most of Your 20s - Catherine ShannonElon Musk to Shivon Zilis, (cc: Sam Teller) - Aug 28, 2017 12:08 AM This is very annoying. Please encourage them to go start a company. I've had enough.

Six Selections on Self-Defense - by Andrew WuA relationship, notably, is not an algorithm. It is a gestalt.

against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannthey have explained choice in terms of choice, rather than in terms of something more basic.
The Stamp Collectorpeople who either believe they can't matter, or who believe that no one can matter.
Replacing guiltis to start exploring that feeling that there must be something else to life, that there must be something more to do — and either find something worth working towards, or find that there really isn't actually anything missing. This first sort of listless guilt, I think, comes from someone who wants to find something else to do, and hasn't yet.
Replacing guiltBut for lots and lots of people, the idea of missing by as little as possible never seems to cross their mind
Failing with Abandoncontinue trying to get as close to your target as you can.
Failing with Abandon(Scrupulous people: in the interim, please don't feel guilty about wasting motion! Treat it like an important part of the human action process rather than something to be ashamed of. Future posts will expand on this idea.)
Half-assing it with everything you've gotIn order to replace guilt and shame with intrinsic motivation, it is first necessary to break the slacker/tryer dichotomy.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotInstead of being a perfectionist about the paper, be a perfectionist about writing the paper. Be a perfectionist about identifying good strategies, about abandoning sunk costs, about killing your darlings, about noticing when you're done. Be a perfectionist about wasting no attention. Be a perfectionist about learning from your mistakes. Perfectionism can be a powerful tool, but there's no need to point it at overachieving on metrics you don't care about.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotGreat! Harness the perfectionist within you, and point it towards the goal of hitting your target with minimum effort.

Half-assing it with everything you've gotRemember what you're trying to achieve, identify your quality target, and aim for that: no higher, no lower.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotWhat I am saying is, don't conflate the quality line with the preference curve.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotThat said, the quality target can be really really high. In fact, the quality target is sometimes unatainably high. Often, we simply aren't capable of hitting our quality targets, and in those cases, we do want to push as far right along the preference curve as we can.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotHalf-ass everything, with everything you've got.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotin order to hit your quality target as fast as possible.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotIf you want to be highly effective, remember what you're fighting for.
Half-assing it with everything you've gotThere’s no time like now
The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your FutureThe catch, of course, is that true purpose doesn’t sit around waiting to be discovered. It requires constant pursuit. Here’s what I’ve learned from a decade and a half of sprinting
The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your FutureAt the same time, grit and discipline aren’t enough. You need purpose.
The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your FutureI’m willing to bet that what you’re really worried about is someone else owning your most precious possession: your future.
The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your FutureI’m urging you, especially at the dawn of your career, to instead choose life over balance, and make the work so meaningful that you wouldn’t want it to exist as a distinct concept. This is how you ensure that your future remains yours.
The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your FutureIt serves a valuable role in terms of kicking things off—e.g. if you live in a small town and you’re deciding whether to move away; or if you need motivation to work through the prerequisites before getting to the stuff you enjoy; or if the easiest way to overcome the fear of asking people out is to invoke your fear of dying alone.
From fear to excitement — LessWrongFear-based relationships are “anything but loneliness”. Fear-based socializing is “anything but rejection”. By contrast, excitement-based motivation looks like “I want to solve this problem”; “I love being with this person”; “I want to smash this performance”. When you’re thinking in detail about what you really want, you’re much better at aiming towards i
