The value proposition of the routine is that it becomes so ingrained it switches over from something you do purposely (hard) to something you do habitually (less hard). In other words, it disappears into the background, working quietly in service of your productivity without using up all your resources.
#179: Beyond routines - by Haley Nahman - Maybe Baby
All this planning is evidence of a kind of value system. It appears I’ve deemed the routine the highest form an activity can take; the perfect, syncopated rhythm through which I might finally, properly live.

In our capitalist world, it’s seen as truly strange and defective should someone be unable to produce at a “normal” rate. But when we look closer, why is it so horrifying that one should not find it easy to create all the time?
The Myth of Writer's Block - by eliza mclamb
There’s a certain entitlement in the “writer’s block” concept. God help me, some immovable object has come to stand in between me and my unstoppable force of creative genius. If only this hulking disgrace could move out of the way, then I could easily access my greatest ideas, which flow to me like a constant river of divine inspiration. I’m sorry, but I don’t think the block is to blame.
The Myth of Writer's Block - by eliza mclamb
I have never found this idea to be useful or true for me in my own practice. The truth is that I can always write something. I compose texts and tweets and direct messages and emails and all sorts of things, and I find myself to be perfectly capable of doing that any day of the week. Can I always write something good? Absolutely not.

How can pursuing pleasure lead to less pleasure? But that’s how our brains are wired (perhaps as a protective mechanism). At a certain point, addicts still pursue the stimulus, but more to avoid the pain of dopamine deprivation.
The State of the Culture, 2024 - by Ted Gioia
This is the new culture. And its most striking feature is the absence of Culture (with a capital C) or even mindless entertainment—both get replaced by compulsive activity.
The State of the Culture, 2024 - by Ted Gioia
The tech platforms aren’t like the Medici in Florence, or those other rich patrons of the arts. They don’t want to find the next Michelangelo or Mozart. They want to create a world of junkies—because they will be the dealers. Addiction is the goal.

We all exist to save each other. There is barely anything else worth living for.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princess
If you’ve been encouraged to define a healthy life as a frictionless one, I think it may be inevitable that a life devoid of contact starts to feel like healing.

Doesn’t aspiring to construct a perfect self imply a desire to destroy the current one, anyway?

As lives go, this one has a beautiful sales pitch; the videos paint a world without conflict, without pain, without uncertainty, without the tidal waves of emotion that often leave me bedridden or sobbing on the streetcar. Yes, these people may be setting up their shots by themselves, but they’re also beautiful and rich and seemingly content. The best thing about tripods, I’ve heard, is that they can’t hurt your feelings.

My friendships have helped me understand what I never liked about dating, which is that I don’t want to get to know people unless I’m going to keep knowing them.

FDA Approves First CRISPR Gene Editing Treatment for Sickle Cell Disease | Scientific American
Exa-cel directs an enzyme called Cas9 to a gene, called BCL11A, that typically prevents the body from making a form of hemoglobin found only in fetuses. Cas9 deactivates BCL11A in bone marrow stem cells, where red blood cells are made, by cutting its DNA, and the cells begin producing the fetal hemoglobin and creating red blood cells with a normal round shape.

car travel is much cheaper in the US than in many other countries, making high-speed rail comparatively less competitive
The Long, Sad History of American Attempts to Build High-Speed Rail, Part II
one of the chief difficulties of building high-speed rail in the US is a “deep hostility to inter-city passenger trains at all political levels,” and citizens who have “little or no concept of inter-city rail travel.”

Around the world, only two high-speed rail lines (Paris-Lyon and Tokyo-Osaka) earn enough money from fares to pay back their infrastructure costs and operating costs

There’s no dedicated source of federal funding for projects, which makes them vulnerable to changes in federal or state budgets.

Thus the overwhelming priority of energy policy must be making it easier to build things.

more long-distance transmission lines, tying the entire country together in what is sometimes called a macrogrid

There is currently more generation capacity32 waiting in the interconnection queue than all existing US power plants combined.

Transmission lines require approval from every state they cross (and, in some states, every county),29 and states often only consider in-state benefits when making their decision, rather than the benefits to the grid as a whole.

With variable sources of generation, which might vary 15-30% from their projected next-day output, greater reserve margins are needed to ensure demand can be met if variable generation is less than predicted.

solar power has a much smaller “minimum efficient scale.” Unlike other sources of electricity, which get cheaper as plants get larger (up to several hundred megawatts), solar PV starts to see diminishing returns in plant size around 20MW.9 Solar producers are thus less incentivized to build large centralized power stations.

Even though the tear tracks on my face had dried I started sniffling again. “I love you so much it kind of hurts.” He laughed. “I love you more.” “Then you must be in a lot of pain.” “No pain,” he said. “No pain.”
