a psychoanalysis bent on understanding people is going to be very limited. It’s not about redescribing somebody such that they become like a character in a novel. It’s really showing you how much your wish to know yourself is a consequence of an anxiety state—and how it might be to live as yourself not knowing much about what’s going on.
Paris Review - Adam Phillips, The Art of Nonfiction No. 7
Yes. We really do know the other person in some profound sense—and also we really don’t. And you could think that the fantasy of knowing is spurred by or prompted by something like “this person has a powerful effect on me and it’s so overwhelming that I’m going to manage this through a fantasy of knowledge.” For Proust, for example, knowing people is often very much about dealing with the anxiety that one can’t control them. As though, if I know or understand you, then I will have some sense of what you’re doing and where you’re going when you’re not with me. The question is what we use unders…

What psychoanalysis, at its best, does is cure you of your self-knowledge. And of your wish to know yourself in that coherent, narrative way. You can only recover your appetite, and appetites, if you can allow yourself to be unknown to yourself.
Paris Review - Adam Phillips, The Art of Nonfiction No. 7
The need not to know yourself. Symptoms are forms of self-knowledge.
Paris Review - Adam Phillips, The Art of Nonfiction No. 7
Analysis should do two things that are linked together. It should be about the recovery of appetite, and the need not to know yourself.
Paris Review - Adam Phillips, The Art of Nonfiction No. 7
Patients come because they are suffering from something. They want that suffering to be alleviated. Ideally, in the process of doing the analysis, they might find their suffering is alleviated or modified, but also they might discover there are more important things than to alleviate one’s suffering.
Paris Review - Adam Phillips, The Art of Nonfiction No. 7
The point is that it’s an experiment in what your life might be like if you speak freely to another person—speak and allow that person to show you the ways in which you stop yourself thinking and speaking freely.

I am resolutely opposed to contrasting the predatory anarchy of the "free years" with Soviet times as orderly and lawful.
A Conversation on Freedom. A Conversation with Alexander Kyrlezhev
My stories about Soviet-era life and its rules often provoke outrage among those who, like me, lived through those years ("nothing like that happened!")—and amazement among their children, my students: "But my parents don't remember that!" They didn't notice! And no wonder: even schoolchildren back then knew how to cynically enforce all these prohibitions.
A Conversation on Freedom. A Conversation with Alexander Kyrlezhev
This kind of freedom—freedom from truth, from conscientiousness, freedom from simple distinctions ("Who knows anything anyway?") that oblige you to anything—came precisely from Soviet times.

"new historical community—the Soviet people."
On the Phenomenon of Soviet Man. An Interview with Elena Kudryavtseva
Not quite so: the Soviet "new man" was raised not in bare soil, but in specially prepared soil and under a protective cloak. Furthermore, the most rigorous selection of "seeds" was carried out. Initially, it was based on genetics—class: of all the classes of pre-revolutionary Russia, only the rural poor and unskilled workers were allowed to continue the lineage in the Soviet state. (

I would describe the phenomenon of the "Soviet man" rather negatively: noting not what is there, but what is not there and should not be there. And first among these absences, I would name self-respect—what Pushkin called the "first science":

And I now do my mathematics with a proof assistant. I have a lot of wishes in terms of getting this proof assistant to work better, but at least I don’t have to go home and worry about having made a mistake in my work. I know that if I did something, I did it, and I don’t have to come back to it nor do I have to worry about my arguments being too complicated or about how to convince others that my arguments are correct. I can just trust the computer.

Firstly, existing foundations of mathematics were based on the languages of predicate logic and languages of this class are too limited. Secondly, existing foundations could not be used to directly express statements about such objects as, for example, the ones in my work on 2-theories.

The primary challenge that needed to be addressed was that the foundations of mathematics were unprepared for the requirements of the task.

And it soon became clear that the only long-term solution was somehow to make it possible for me to use computers to verify my abstract, logical, and mathematical constructions.

I think it was at this moment that I largely stopped doing what is called “curiosity-driven research” and started to think seriously about the future. I didn’t have the tools to explore the areas where curiosity was leading me and the areas that I considered to be of value and of interest and of beauty.

In 1999–2000, again at the IAS, I was giving a series of lectures, and Pierre Deligne (Professor in the School of Mathematics) was taking notes and checking every step of my arguments. Only then did I discover that the proof of a key lemma in my paper contained a mistake and that the lemma, as stated, could not be salvaged.

Hannah Zeavin Tells Us Why Psychoanalysis Is About More Than Just Daddy Issues
Everything redounds to mother, there is no outside. What she conveys to the child is everything. She is a medium, a matrix, a container. I identified that what they’re all saying was that the mother is a medium of care and that she alone is responsible for childhood development and outcomes.

In the same way that a Tolstovian peasant has a deep, spiritual knowledge of the land, we will have a deep, spiritual knowledge of Tung Tung Tung Sahur. The politics of the future will be cautious, conservative, pragmatic, and unadventurous, grounded in empirical experience instead of fanatical ideologies. We will no longer try to think outside of the things we can see. It’s just that absolutely nothing we see will be real.

Politics is losing its content; being on the left has come to mean being a girl, and being on the right is just another way of saying being a boy. Teenage boys watch esoteric Nazi edits for the same reason they used to pull girls’ hair; as a way of working through the ambivalence of the heterosexual relation. Right-wing economic policy is now framed as a way of punishing women, reducing their social status until they’re willing to turn back the clock on liberation. In some parts of the left, anything can be justified as long as it seems to reduce the power of men. When we can no longer conceiv…

a lot of Silicon Valley ideologues agree, they just think this is a good thing. In their future, the vast majority of people will be wireheads, hooked up to an AI-powered pleasure machine that will keep them in a state of permanent hedonic bliss. At which point democracy becomes impossible, the masses are evicted from history, and a natural elite emerges to rule the world

This is what lies behind a lot of the growing liberal panic over the decline of literacy. For a growing chorus of people who write in the Atlantic, we’re recoiling into pre-Enlightenment conditions of absolute domination. A population that can no longer think for itself will end up voluntarily ceding power to strongmen or demagogues. The end of literacy is the end of public reason. A post-literate world will be unreasonable, irrational, full of anger and madness, and people eating each other in the streets.

In fact, the written word is a kind of madness. It tears you out of your actual context and deposits you in a world of bodiless abstractions. Lewis Mumford called it the ‘general starvation of the mind,’ in which actual sensuous knowledge of the world is replaced by ‘mere literacy, the ability to read signs.’

‘Not the soldier, but the brave soldier; not the princess, but the beautiful princess; not the oak, but the sturdy oak.’ There’s nothing in the world that isn’t already known, that can’t be made instantly legible by assimilating it to some stereotype. Post-literate culture is deeply incurious.

The gift of not only freedom but also of the power to liberate man is passed on to the Apostles and constitutes the activity of the church.

Being appears before a person out of its impossibility, and freedom – from its own impossibility. In light of this void, these notions become filled.

Sergei Averintsev (The Poetics of Early Byzantine Literature) reminded us about the positive meaning of these notions in Byzantine thought (and in Middle Age Christian thought – Averintsev’s examples are taken from Thomas Aquinas; and, generally speaking, in classic Christian thought that, for example, even our contemporary, Christos Yannaris, can have).

The extreme degree of non-freedom is death. It is described in the Psalms. The highest degree of freedom is eternal glory, as Dante said: the righteous soul, he says, passes ad aeternae gloriae libertaten, to the freedom of eternal glory.
