Curius / OnboardingAn Abundance Faction has some very interesting opportunities with these voters. A focus on addressing the cost of living by driving down the underlying cost of goods like housing, transportation, and energy is attractive to voters who are economically pinched but skeptical of redistribution.
The rise of the abundance factionAbundance speaks mostly to those who need government to work, not those who wish to see it drowned in a bathtub.
The rise of the abundance factionthe state that we created a half-century ago had the effect of displacing or slowing down the parts of organizations — public and private — focused on the delivery of goods and services. The aggregate effect of that state has been a widely diffused expectation that more or less everything that operates in physical space will take an extraordinary and unpredictable amount of time and be disappointing and uninspiring in its results.
The rise of the abundance factionSimilarly, the Abundance Faction is coming into being as the contradictions and pathologies of the administrative state built in the 1960s and ‘70s are approaching a state of crisis.
The rise of the abundance factionIntellectuals and activists motivated by a different set of issues than those that have animated our politics over the last 50 years; a segment of business alienated from a radicalized Republican Party and drawn into the Abundance Faction’s congenial policy agenda and; socially moderate and economically activist, growth-oriented voters.
The rise of the abundance factionAbundance has its own quite sweeping package of reform that envisions a wholesale program of state-building — building housing, clean energy, and infrastructure by reforming our creaky, captured systems of governance at all levels, and building a simpler, more effective and democratically legitimate welfare and regulatory state.
The rise of the abundance factionRaising the aspirations of other people is one of the most beneficial things you can do with your time. At critical moments, you can do so simply by suggesting they do something more important and ambitious than what they have in mind.
Crafting my life’s work: a progress reportIn fact, we are witnessing the early symptoms of this impending battle across various parts of the world, albeit in local, peripheral, partial and ephemeral forms. Economically, this is seen in the experimentation with hybrid models that blend free trade and protectionism, especially in critical areas such as energy transition, telecommunications, microprocessors and modern industrialism.
Metapolis | The age of uncertainty. Liminal time“moments of creative effervescence”—times when new ideals emerge to guide humanity
Metapolis | The age of uncertainty. Liminal timeSooner or later, people must gravitate towards some organising principles for the imagined future—whatever they might be—as long as these principles restore a sense of certainty to a destiny they can wholeheartedly embrace. Doing so is crucial to reinstating meaning to collective, familial and personal histories.
Metapolis | The age of uncertainty. Liminal timeWith no envisioned tomorrow that improves upon the present, there also ceases to be a path—whether straight, winding, fragmented or uninterrupted—by which to navigate the present dilemmas about imagined well-being. Social time evaporates.
Metapolis | The age of uncertainty. Liminal time1. The Paralysis of the Predictive Horizon. Societies traditionally orient their notion of the future—whether real or imagined—around a predictive horizon. As the neoliberal predictive horizon dissipates, the concept of a future itself vanishes; there is no destination to anchor mobilising hopes sustainably
Metapolis | The age of uncertainty. Liminal timeXishuangbanna’s natural forests are particularly rich in biodiversity. Although it only accounts for 0.2% of China’s land area, it contains more than 25% of China’s flora and fauna [77]. Xishuangbanna tropical rainforest is special and irreplaceable and has extremely high conservation value.

A blog post is a very long and complex search query to find fascinating people and make them route interesting stuff to your inboxYou will visit your parents, and when they ask you about your life you will have two choices. You can either be incomprehensible and see them grow concerned about things you are excited about, or you can talk about surface-level things and cry a little when you are alone at night
A blog post is a very long and complex search query to find fascinating people and make them route interesting stuff to your inboxI watched every Kubrick film and didn’t really see the fuss. Then I read up on him, and learned that e.g. he had thousands upon thousands of doorways in London photographed while location scouting for Eyes Wide Shut. It’s not that obsessiveness means quality, that inputs mean output. But it means meaning. As I rewatch him, I have good reason to consider many parts of the production as meaningful, and in fact I like him far more on the second runthrough.
Cracking culturesAmerican satirist and writer Mark Twain was born on 30 November 1835, exactly two weeks after the comet's perihelion. In his autobiography, published in 1909, he said, I came in with Halley's comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: "Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together."[
Halley's Comet - WikipediaThe comet added to the unrest in China on the eve of the Xinhai Revolution that would end the last dynasty in 1911. As James Hutson, a missionary in Sichuan Province at the time, recorded: "The people believe that it indicates calamity such as war, fire, pestilence, and a change of dynasty. In some places on certain days the doors were unopened for half a day, no water was carried and many did not even drink water as it was rumoured that pestilential vapour was being poured down upon the earth from the comet

Halley's Comet - WikipediaIn 1066, the comet was seen in England and thought to be an omen: later that year Harold II of England died at the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror claimed the throne. The comet is represented on the Bayeux Tapestry and described in the tituli as a star

Halley's Comet - WikipediaThere is limited publicly available data on the QSBS exclusion. Policymakers, economists, and tax specialists alike know neither how much the exclusion really costs, nor the attributes of the taxpayers that qualify for it.
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthStock should lose its QSBS exclusion status upon its transfer, thereby preventing the original recipients of this now-valuable stock from shifting the tax benefits to other people. The stated purpose of the QSBS exclusion is to promote the development of small high-tech startup businesses, not to provide the friends and family of those investors with tax-free capital gains.
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthFor instance, each dollar of income above $400,000 could reduce the permitted exclusion by an identical amount, thereby precluding the exemption for taxpayers with incomes greater than $800,000.
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthThe U.S. Department of Treasury estimates that repealing the QSBS exclusion would result in $21.3 billion of additional tax revenue between 2023 and 2032, or about $2.1 billion per year
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthOne study in 2018 found that the exclusion increased funding slightly for qualifying businesses, but those that benefited the most were those which generally had high administrative capacity, meaning they were less likely to be “small.”8 This same study, and one from 2012, found that the early-stage investors—rather than the businesses themselves—captured about a third of the benefit
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthThe founders and early investors behind the creation of Uber Technologies Inc., for example, used the QSBS exclusion despite Uber’s valuation at its Initial Public Offering in 2019 of approximately $80 billion.
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthThe reason: “Small” businesses under this law are permitted to have gross assets of up to $50 million and still qualify for the exclusion, but this limit refers to the amount of cash and “aggregate adjusted bases of property” held by the business, not to the actual valuation of the business
Money for nothing: The Qualified Small Business Stock capital gains exclusion is a giveaway to wealthy investors, startup founders, and their employees - Equitable GrowthPolicymakers considered limiting the QSBS exclusion in 2021, when the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Build Back Better Act. The proposed legislation would have limited the QSBS exclusion to 50 percent (from 100 percent) for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of greater than $400,000, and for trusts and estates. The exclusion was never taken up by the U.S. Senate when parts of the Build Back Better Act were folded into the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which left the QSBS exclusion untouched.

The big lesson is don’t discard something as a failure. Give the universe a chance. Give people a chance to communicate with each other. What’s remarkable is these people that love this film, this isolated little community. But the same thing happened in Paris as well where it ran forever. The guys from Daft Punk met at a screening of Phantom, so I wound up with writing the lyrics to ‘Beyond’ and ‘Touch’ and singing on ‘Touch’ on the ‘Random Access Memories’ album because these guy…

Hamming’s Reflection • On Bell LabsWe were all of an age to be deeply affected by the Great Depression, and as a result felt that we owed the world a living, and not that we had only to behave ourselves and the world would be obliged to take care of us. This is the fundamental attitude that explains a lot of our drive to succeed.

The Worst of All Possible Universes and the Best of All Possible Earths: Three Body and Chinese Science Fiction | Tor.comThe China of the present is a bit like America during science fiction’s Golden Age, when science and technology filled the future with wonder, presenting both great crises and grand opportunities. This was rich soil for the growth and flourishing of science fiction.
The Worst of All Possible Universes and the Best of All Possible Earths: Three Body and Chinese Science Fiction | Tor.comIt’s interesting to note that the optimism towards science that underlay much of last century’s Chinese science fiction has almost completely vanished. Contemporary science fiction reflects much suspicion and anxiety about technological progress, and the futures portrayed in these works are dark and uncertain.
