being there for each other when things go right is actually more important for relationship quality.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticOne of the telltale signs of the disaster couples Gottman studied was their inability to connect over each other’s good news.
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlanticappreciate the intent.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticThe ability to interpret your partner’s actions and intentions charitably can soften the sharp edge of conflict.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticOne way to practice kindness is by being generous about your partner’s intentions.
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlantichealthy relationship, exercise kindness early and often.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticThe hardest time to practice kindness is, of course, during a fight—but this is also the most important time to be kind. Letting contempt and aggression spiral out of control during a conflict can inflict irrevocable damage on a relationship.
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlanticneglecting small moments of emotional connection will slowly wear away at your relationship.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticMasters tend to think about kindness as a muscle
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlanticthe more someone receives or witnesses kindness, the more they will be kind themselves, which leads to upward spirals of love and generosity in a relationship
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticKindness, on the other hand, glues couples together.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticContempt, they have found, is the number one factor that tears couples apart.
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlantic“It’s scanning the partner for what the partner is doing right or scanning him for what he’s doing wrong and criticizing versus respecting him and expressing appreciation.”
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticIt’s not just scanning environment,
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlanticthey are scanning social environment for things they can appreciate and say thank you for. They are building this culture of respect and appreciation very purposefully. Disasters are scanning the social environment for partners’ mistakes
Masters of Love - Health - The Atlantic“There’s a habit of mind that the masters have,
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticDo they bring kindness and generosity; or contempt, criticism, and hostility?
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticThese bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow up had “turn-toward bids” 33 percent of the time. Only three in ten of their bids for emotional connection were met with intimacy. The couples who were still together after six years had “turn-toward bids” 87 percent of the time. Nine times out of ten, they were meeting their partner’s emotional needs.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticPeople who turned toward their partners in the study responded by engaging the bidder, showing interest and support in the bid. Those who didn’t—those who turned away—would not respond or respond minimally and continue doing whatever they were doing
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticThe masters, by contrast, showed low physiological arousal. They felt calm and connected together, which translated into warm and affectionate behavior, even when they fought. It’s not that the masters had, by default, a better physiological make-up than the disasters; it’s that masters had created a climate of trust and intimacy that made both of them more emotionally and thus physically comfortable.
Masters of Love - Health - The AtlanticThe disasters looked calm during the interviews, but their physiology, measured by the electrodes, told a different story. Their heart rates were quick, their sweat glands were active, and their blood flow was fast. Following thousands of couples longitudinally, Gottman found that the more physiologically active the couples were in the lab, the quicker their relationships deteriorated over time.

The spectator can witness their relationship - but he can do no more: he is forced to recognize himself as the outsider he is. He cannot deceive himself into believing that she is naked for him. He cannot turn her into a nude.
Chapter 3 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerPublicity is essentially eventless.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerAccording to publicity to be sophisticated is to live beyond conflict.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerThe entire world becomes a setting for the fulfilment of publicity's promise of the good life.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerIt remains credible because the truthfulness of publicity is judged, not by the real fulfilment of its promises, but by the relevance of its fantasies to those of the spectator-buyer. Its essential application is not to reality but to daydreams.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerThe power to spend money is the power to live.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerThe oil painting was addressed to those who made money out of the market. Publicity is addressed to those who constitute the market, to the spectator-buyer who is also the consumer-producer from whom profits are made twice over - as worker and then as buyer.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John Bergerthe function of publicity is very different from that of the oil Painting.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerWhat he has learnt at school of history, mythology, poetry can be used in the manufacturing of glamour. Cigars can be sold in the name of a King, underwear in connection with the Sphinx, a new car by reference to the status of a country house.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerPublicity is, in essence, nostalgic. It has to sell the past to the future. It cannot itself supply the standards of its own claims. And so all its references to quality are bound to be retrospective and traditional. It would lack both confidence and credibility if it used a strictly contemporary language.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerAs an art-form it derived from the principle that you are what you have.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerPublicity is the culture of the consumer society.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerA systematic study needs to be made of this. Here we can do no more than indicate a few areas where the similarity of the devices and aims is particularly striking.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerIt speaks in the same voice about the same things.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John Bergerthe publicity image steals her love of herself as she is, and offers it back to her for the price of the product.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerBeing envied is a solitary form of reassurance.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerThis is why publicity can never really afford to be about the product or opportunity it is proposing to the buyer who is not yet enjoying it. Publicity is never a celebration of a pleasure-in-itself. Publicity is always about the future buyer. It offers him an image of himself made glamorous by the product or opportunity it is trying to sell. The image then makes him envious of himself as he might be. Yet what makes this self-which-he-might-be enviable? The envy of others. Publicity is about social relations, not objects. Its promise is not of pleasure, but of happiness: happiness as judged fr…
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerThe state of being envied is what constitutes glamour. And publicity is the process of manufacturing glamour.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerPublicity images also belong to the moment in the sense that they must be continually renewed and made up-to-date. Yet they never speak of the present. Often they refer to the past and always they speak of the future.
Chapter 7 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerAnd like all such advertisements it is heartless.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerHe had to see himself as a painter in a way that denied the seeing of a painter.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John Bergerwas the pleasure of seeing themselves depicted as landowners and this pleasure was enhanced by the ability of oil paint to render their land in all its substantiality.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerIn most cases the possession of private land was the precondition for such philosophic enjoyment - which was not uncommon among the landed gentry.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerBefore these canvases the spectator-owner hoped to see the classic face of his own passion or grief or generosity. The idealized appearances he found in the painting were an aid, a support, to his own view of himself.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerToday the final stage of this development can be seen in the puppet tv appearance of the average politician.
Chapter 5 of Ways of Seeing by John BergerWhat is new and disconcerting here is the individualized presence which needs to suggest distance.
