What is Design Thinking? | IxDFDesign teams use design thinking to tackle ill-defined/unknown problems (aka wicked problems) because they can reframe these in human-centric ways and focus on what’s most important for users.
What is Design Thinking? | IxDF+ Intersectionally marginalised people viewed as being able to act for themselves. - Intersectionality often individualised (to the exclusion of thinking about inequality structures).
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotIntersectionality is not a synonym for diversity – there is no such thing as an 'intersectional' group of people, the more appropriate term for those who experience multiple and compounding inequalities would be to state they are from "intersectionally marginalised communities" and to be explicit about which intersections we are referring to e.g.; South Asian Women experiencing racism and sexism. Intersectionality is primarily a tool for understanding invisible power relations and how they shape inequality, not identity. Intersectionality looks at "interlocking" systems of oppression and how t…
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotIntersectionality is not looking to construct a hierarchy of inequality, where some forms of oppression (e.g. racism, sexism, ableism) are seen as more important than others.[19]
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotIntersectionality is not about pitting different people or groups against each other to assess who is most marginalised or disadvantaged. Instead, intersectionality aims to understand how different people's experiences are shaped where multiple forms of oppression or disadvantage interact.
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotStructural inequalities, reflected as relative disadvantage and privilege, are the outcomes of the interaction between social categories, power relations and contexts. As a result, an individual's experiences of inequality can be chronic or transitory, creating unique lived experiences.
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotthe term 'intersectionality' has also been expanded to include intersections between a range of 'social categories' in addition to race and gender, such as disability, sexual orientation, occupation and socio-economic disadvantage, and wider life experiences.
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scot"Intersectionality is an analytical tool[11] that we use for the purpose of equality and human rights monitoring to show the distinct forms of harm, abuse, discrimination and disadvantage experienced by people when multiple categories of social identity interact with each other."
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotThe primary dimensions of diversity, personal characteristics such as age, ethnicity and gender, are shown in the centre. Socially and culturally a person is also influenced by environmental, social and cultural factors and experiences, learnings from family, friendships, community, nationality, belief system. Within organisations, a person is influenced by the group or area in which we work, and the structures or processes that they operate within, which may include systemic barriers and bias.

3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scota framework for thinking about the different dimensions of diversity within individuals and institutions, known as the diversity wheel. This is a useful tool for thinking about how different characteristics intersect with systems and structures to shape a person's experience.
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scot"Intersectionality is a metaphor for understanding the ways that multiple forms of inequality or disadvantage sometimes compound themselves and create obstacles that often are not understood among conventional ways of thinking."
3. What is meant by the concept of 'intersectionality'? - Using intersectionality to understand structural inequality in Scotland: evidence synthesis - gov.scotBecause parents are most often cisgender and heterosexual (Hasenbush et al., 2014), LGBTQ identity is a key a point of difference, not similarity, between generations, making this type of conflict often more damaging and long-lasting than other forms of intergenerational conflict.
How LGBTQ Adults Maintain Ties with Rejecting Parents: Theorizing “Conflict Work” as Family Work - PMCHowever, LGBTQ adults have an additional and unique source of potential conflict due to their socially stigmatized sexual or gender identity (Reczek 2016a, b; Montano et al., 2018; Robinson, 2018; Choi et al, 2015). Given that gender and sexuality are core dimensions of identity, LGBTQ-related conflict is not a result of what adult children (or parents) do, but because of who LGBTQ people are.
How LGBTQ Adults Maintain Ties with Rejecting Parents: Theorizing “Conflict Work” as Family Work - PMCSome folks who fall anywhere in the middle of the sexual orientation spectrum will describe themselves as queer rather than bisexual or pansexual.
What Does Queer Mean? - Queer Definition, Queer vs GaySome of these identities are within sexual identities of bisexual, lesbian, gay, pansexual, etc. Some of these identities are within gender: transgender, cisgender, non-binary, femme, gender flexible, etc. Relational identities such as monogamous, polyamorous, swinging, open, etc. Queer women are on a spectrum of gender and sexual fluidity.”
What Does Queer Mean? - Queer Definition, Queer vs Gay“I like to think that my queer identity is me saying: ‘You thought you were insulting me, but this is actually something I love about myself,’”
What Does Queer Mean? - Queer Definition, Queer vs GayAccording to Schuster, “any [orientation or identity] that's not straight” is considered queer. "Beyond that, it's really about if the person with that identity wants to see themselves as being part of a larger queer umbrella," they explain.
What Does Queer Mean? - Queer Definition, Queer vs Gay“For many people who use the term 'queer,' it is specifically about embracing this idea of being out of mainstream ideas and embracing one's own authentic self,” Schuster explains. In general, “queerness” is an umbrella term that is both an orientation and a community for those on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.
What Does Queer Mean?
SỰ RA ĐỜI CỦA TÌNH YÊU LÃNG MẠN (MARILYN YALOM) – NGUYỄN THỊ MINH blogUltimately, queer dancers work within these traditionally binary forms out of a deep love for them. They advocate for not just tolerance but inclusivity and acceptance because of a belief that these parts of the dance world can grow, expand, and evolve to hold them in all of their queerness, without compromising the art’s core.
6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance MagazineThe simplest change is looking at the language used in technique classes. In ballet, that means rather than differentiating between ladies and men, instead referencing who is on pointe and who isn’t, or, in pas de deux work, who is leading and who is following—an adaptation that has already begun to be implemented in ballroom and other social dance styles. Coles reminds her ballroom students that “there is a leader and there is a follower. Some people enjoy one more than the other, and it is not related to your gender or sexual orientation—these are the roles on this team.”

6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance MagazineGender is a spectrum, and artists whose gender identities don’t fall neatly on either side of a socially constructed binary face a more complex reckoning with where and how they fit within these art forms.

6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance MagazineUntil a rule change in September 2019 redefining a ballroom couple as “a leader and a follower without regard to the sex or gender of the dancer,” the National Dance Council of America—the official governing body for ballroom dancing in the U.S.—did not allow same-sex or gender-neutral couples at events it sanctioned.
6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance Magazineout of a bit of fear, and being really one-track-minded. I felt like I had to put all my energy into ballet. And I think also, for me, as a Black person, I didn’t want to add another potential obstacle and have more reasons for someone to discriminate against me.”

6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance MagazineBut for queer dance artists who work within forms that are traditionally organized along the gender binary, like ballet, ballroom, and Irish dance, the friction between who they are and what the dance forms they love allow of them creates numerous challenges—regardless of whether they make the choice to come out, a deeply personal decision in which safety may be a major factor.
6 LGBTQ+ Artists Who Work in Traditionally Binary Dance Forms—Ballet, Ballroom, Irish Dance—Share Their Experiences - Dance Magazine“I was constantly afraid that something about the way I danced would give me away to the audience. Women in ballet are supposed to be small and quiet and look like the rest. It was so destabilizing to leave the deepest, most beautiful parts of myself, the potential of myself as a whole individual, in this little shabby box outside of the studio.”

Gender Roles, Dance Roles and the LGBT Swing Community — Boulder Swing DanceLearn how to dance both roles. Especially, I would argue, if you’re straight and cisgendered. It can be pretty uncomfortable to be the odd one out in a roomful of people all appearing to fill their assigned gender roles. If everyone dances both roles, and not just the LGBTQ people, that’s one less thing that places us outside of the norm.
Gender Roles, Dance Roles and the LGBT Swing Community — Boulder Swing DanceFirst, and most importantly, model the behavior you want to see. Don’t just ask people to dance regardless of their gender expression—actively make a point of reaching out to people who present outside the obvious gender binary.
Gender Roles, Dance Roles and the LGBT Swing Community — Boulder Swing DanceIt’s still relatively rare for a potential partner to ask “Do you want to lead or follow?” unless both usually dance the same role.
Gender Roles, Dance Roles and the LGBT Swing Community — Boulder Swing DanceSome ballroom and Latin dances have much more strongly enforced gender roles than Lindy hop, where everyone dances the traditional role and women are expected to wait passively for an invitation to dance.
Gender Roles, Dance Roles and the LGBT Swing Community — Boulder Swing DanceThere is no expectation that women should wait for men to ask them for a dance, and no social repercussions to whether the lead asks the follow or vice versa.
