"America's poet... He is America."[
Walt Whitman
it’s all right, that he knows they didn’t believe him when he said he couldn’t swim, and blesses his killers in the way that only the dead can afford to forgive.

Lo, body and soul—this land, My own Manhattan with spires, and the sparkling and hurrying tides, and the ships, The varied and ample land, the South and the North in the light, Ohio’s shores and flashing Missouri, And ever the far-spreading prairies cover’d with grass and corn.

Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else, The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

Welcome is every organ and attribute of me, and of any man hearty and clean, Not an inch nor a particle of an inch is vile, and none shall be less familiar than the rest.

But those people haven’t read the book. McCurdy takes her time to remember difficult and complex moments of her life, staying true to her younger self while ultimately trying to come to terms with who she is as an independent adult. It’s a triumph of the confessional genre.

The arc of her memoir is really trying to navigate the complicated question of what, if anything, a child owes a caregiver who mistreats them.

In moments like this, H Mart is the bridge that guides me away from the memories that haunt me, of chemo head and skeletal bodies and logging milligrams of hydrocodone.
Crying in H Mart | The New Yorker
Sometimes my grief feels as though I’ve been left alone in a room with no doors. Every time I remember that my mother is dead, it feels like I’m colliding into a wall that won’t give. There’s no escape, just a hard wall that I keep ramming into over and over, a reminder of the immutable reality that I will never see her again.
Crying in H Mart | The New Yorker
My grief comes in waves and is usually triggered by something arbitrary.

Interviewed by Linda KuehlISSUE 74, FALL-WINTER 1978 It is usual for the interviewer to write this paragraph about the circumstances in which the interview was conducted, but the interviewer in this case, Linda Kuehl, died not long after the tapes were transcribed. Linda and I talked on August 18 and August 24, 1977, from about ten in the morning until early afternoon. Both interviews took place in the living room of my husband's and my house on the ocean north of Los Angeles, a house we no longer own. The walls in that room were white. The floors were of terracotta tile, very highly polished.…

Now it’s time to find out who I am. To make the most of each new day I have. To bring purpose to my loss and grief. To love other people and to know they love me back. To love myself. To live, for both of us.
After My Aunt Died, I Had a Few Questions for David Schwimmer - The New York Times
I loved Bing; I was grieving, too, and I had kept the grief at bay by trying to heal the heartache of those around me. But the pain had to come out, and it would be mixed with love, confusion and anger, and that was OK. Having lost the second love of her life, my mother was awash with pain. Yet there she was, teaching us how to grieve. And I had almost missed the lesson.

f death teaches us anything, it’s that nothing lasts forever, not even the insanity of grief.
Opinion | I Thought No One Had Felt Grief Like Mine. Then I Saw ‘The Bear.’ - The New York Times
Grief is not portrayed simply as a character trait or an emotional obstacle. It’s a suffocating and all-encompassing experience that comes rushing through the cracks of everyday life, replacing oxygen with anxiety. “The Bear” depicts grief as a prolonged nervous breakdown. Even the vertiginous aesthetic of the show itself, with its jarring camera work and quick cuts, enforces this sensation. Other shows are about grief. “The Bear” feels like grief. It is a rare and inspired merging of form and content.

Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso” feel like blueprints for finding a way out of grief and moving toward unlikely hope. But all those shows depict a version of grief that appears a lot in pop culture: as a challenge to be confronted or an obstacle to overcome. The point seems to be to reassure viewers that, whatever happens, you’ll be OK. So buck up. It’ll get better.
Opinion | I Thought No One Had Felt Grief Like Mine. Then I Saw ‘The Bear.’ - The New York Times
The bear is clearly important, but its meaning is at first ambiguous. Does it represent ambition? Fear? Regret? By the time the season ended, the symbol was obvious, at least to me. The bear is grief. To be honest, I always recognized it. Because I know that beast all too well.
Opinion | I Thought No One Had Felt Grief Like Mine. Then I Saw ‘The Bear.’ - The New York Times
To die from this plague is a tragedy. To witness a loved one do so is a merciless, unrelenting kind of sadness — prolonged and filled with false hope. It is a faraway, forced mourning, her body a vector of contagion. It is a unique grief overridden by a forced education in a vocabulary I never wanted to learn: hydroxychloroquine, extubation, Remdesivir.
Modern Love: ‘Thank You for Ruining Me’ - The New York Times
I had broken every rule I knew about being with someone who is grieving. I tried to fix it. I tried to distract her. I tried to change the subject. I tried to take away her loss instead of sitting with it.
‘No Love Is Ever Wasted’ - The New York Times
She was grieving, wailing for the loss of dozens of friends she loved. It doesn’t really work to say that those relationships were only imaginary. The emotions were real.
