The sources of the gravitational-wave background can not be identified without further observations and analyses, although binaries of supermassive black holes are leading candidates.
Pulsar timing array - Wikipediathe signal can be entirely attributed to dust in the Milky Way
Gravitational wave - WikipediaA key point is that a tenfold increase in sensitivity (radius of 'reach') increases the volume of space accessible to the instrument by one thousand times.
Gravitational wave - WikipediaThe Birmingham detector measures changes in the polarization state of a microwave beam circulating in a closed loop about one meter across.
Gravitational wave - WikipediaEinstein, who was unfamiliar with the concept of peer review, angrily withdrew the manuscript, never to publish in Physical Review again. Nonetheless, his assistant Leopold Infeld, who had been in contact with Robertson, convinced Einstein that the criticism was correct, and the paper was rewritten with the opposite conclusion and published elsewhere.
Gravitational wave - Wikipediavast majority of scientists have at one time or another used PCA without understanding it, for cases where it’s a suboptimal DR method.
EpisteminkI was discussing the professor’s comments with my roommate the other day, and we both agreed that if we were to go back and redo our undergraduate education, we would basically drop all our extraneous clubs and take as many classes as possible.
AWOL from Academics | Harvard MagazineThe more I think about the physical portion of the Schrödinger theory, the more repulsive I find it. What Schrödinger writes about the visualizability of his theory "is probably not quite right," in other words it's crap.
The Drama in the Development of Quantum Mechanics in 1926-27The ingredients are there.
ambitious women - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixLike art, like writing, life is active and steady revisioning.
ambitious women - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI would love to live like a river flows / carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.
falling into life - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixThat’s the fun part. You can’t design a path with an imperfect world. The map always melts.
falling into life - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixAnd furthermore, we see that the decline in consumer confidence is driven entirely by Republicans, whose sentiment crashed when Biden was elected, a year before rates started to rise:
At least five things for your weekend (#30) - by Noah SmithThe last age of energy abundance — the oil age, in the early 20th century — gave us cars and airplanes and cheap shipping. The advent of cheap solar and batteries could give us cheap metal production, cheap recycling, cheap desalination, cheap robotics, and any other number of cool futuristic stuff.
At least five things for your weekend (#30) - by Noah Smithresource exporters face a very challenging political economy.

Waste-Wilderness: A conversation with Peter L. Galison | FOPHarry Reid made cancellation of the site a condition for his putting President Obama over the finish line in the presidential election of 2008.
Waste-Wilderness: A conversation with Peter L. Galison | FOPYou can whip people up into a genocidal rage if they start to believe wild things to explain the disasters that befall them.
Waste-Wilderness: A conversation with Peter L. Galison | FOPwell, I’m a systems ecologist, it’s good that the biological lands around Oak Ridge are a little contaminated because it keeps people away and then nature can restore itself to its primeval state.
Waste-Wilderness: A conversation with Peter L. Galison | FOPBut that’s exactly how a bad day feels. And I’ll readily forget that last week was a good week and I felt like nothing was wrong at all.
Notes on getting over it - by Jay P - No. JYou know that none of these are true, and that all of these are true.

lakatos.pdfI like to say that almost everything in the world doesn’t have a name.
Wanting Bad Things | The Point Magazinemost disruptions are not productive. That’s also to say most disruptions are not supposed to be productive.
Wanting Bad Things | The Point MagazineI do think we can think about those shoulds, and we can think about ethical and political imperatives, in terms of a desire.
Wanting Bad Things | The Point MagazineAnd that is her invitation for us to think about the ways we can work on our desires because they are themselves the result of these political processes.
Wanting Bad Things | The Point Magazinethey’re doing what everyone does at the internet, which is staring off into the void of the thing and trying to trying to see if there’s life on the other end.
Wanting Bad Things | The Point MagazineThe dream of separatism was sullied by the fact that when you get a bunch of lesbians on the UCLA campus for a couple days for this conference they are just like at each others’ throats the whole time!

Interpretability DreamsThe number of features is likely much higher due to superposition.
Interpretability Dreamsfirst building up a solid foundation of well understood circuits first
Interpretability DreamsThese fields have a stable foundation which can be used, with effort, to check any claim made at higher levels of abstraction, and to translate between different abstractions people build. But the foundation is just the start.
Interpretability DreamsIf one starts with plausible assumptions about what's going on, it's often easy to find illusory supporting evidence of them if you search top-down even if one is mistaken, because there will lots of computation which is correlated with your hypothesis.
Interpretability Dreamstaking existing continual learning techniques and doing the opposite could encourage the type of plasticity/forgetting that would help to scope models down
