“But when a child is doing something that she is passionately interested in, she grows like a tree—in all directions. This is how children learn, how children grow. They send down a taproot like a tree in dry soil. The tree may be stunted but it sends out these roots, and suddenly one of these little taproots grows down and strikes a source of water. And the whole tree grows.”

Spinal cord lesions in sporadic Parkinson’s disease | Acta NeuropathologicaBeing rhetorically effective is a neat trick, but it’s a long way from being practically effective, and these days I think information is a more powerful lever on the world than rhetoric. Much as I’d like to be able to “manifest” the world of my dreams into existence, a broad call to action has a way of…not leading to action. I believe there’s power in showing the world possibilities, which is not quite the same thing as expressing wishes and exhortations.

But this is Bella—and she’s going to do things her own way. “She steps out and she has these bare legs,” Waddington says. “I just thought that was so funny.”
How Emma Stone’s Poor Things Character, Bella Baxter, Came to LifeThe choice to finally place Bella in a complete, socially appropriate look represents a kind of apotheosis for the character, marking a milestone in her development: she’s able to look outside of herself, and take in the world around her.

What if the hippies were right, that you really could just live in harmony with yourself, every day just doing as you please and that chain of desire leading somehow ever onwards to something new and good?
does your body want to chew glass - by benedictMake a plan, and try executing it for five minutes, then twenty, then an hour. Then do it again, and again, and soon you'll feel better. My body doesn't know how to plan ahead, or how to do something hard now so it can feel better later. That's what I have my brain for. Body sensations are for enjoying yourself after you win.

Cosmos: working notes, 1The mathematician Littlewood observed that he didn't see why a study of ethics should have any impact on whether one behaved poorly or well; this seems a damning critique to me.
Cosmos: working notes, 1secular people often believe in the value of deeply held religious beliefs. But believing in belief is not enough. You actually need to believe.
Cosmos: working notes, 1This is one of the things I enjoy about Feynman on "doubt and uncertainty and not knowing". Ditto Jonathan Blow's video game "The Witness". Or Penrose's "Road to Reality". Or for that matter, Sagan in "Cosmos". In each case they are doubling down and exploring beliefs that are important to them, personally. There's a sincerity in it that you can feel. Even when I disagree with it, or find it foreign to my own sensibility, I can still sense it. Tremendous, sincere interest, founded in some of their deepest beliefs, and then developed as far as they can go.
Cosmos: working notes, 1The work of the world is common as mud. Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust. But the thing worth doing well done has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
To be of use by Marge Piercy | Poetry FoundationYou were chairman of the Council on Bioethics, yet you don’t regard yourself as an ethicist. Why? I do not present myself as having professional ethics expertise, the existence of which, in fact, I have doubts about. The term ethicist is of recent vintage. I prefer to say that I engage in moral reflection on various matters of human experience but look at them not through the lens of any ethical theory or system. I’m an old-fashioned humanist. A humanist is concerned broadly with all aspects of human life, not just the ethical.
A Chat With George W. Bush’s Conscience | Health Policy | DISCOVER MagazineThis kind of a friendship is unique in which the things that we share, namely ideas and thoughts and speeches, each one is enriched by what the other one gets. There’s no scarcity of what is between us. Each side gets more from being with the other. And it’s mutual.

There are tough things that happen in one’s life that it’s very helpful to be able to talk to people who would understand you and for whom everything can be open and discussed. So I don’t want to make this simply philosophical.

It’s, in a way, what you said before, in terms of admiration. And you wish that person well for their own sake and enjoy being in their company because it’s uplifting and ennobling and the activities that you engage in with them go deeper into your own soul. The best of those friendships — and this, I think, over a lifetime, I’ve come to endorse — the deepest and richest and most permanent friendship, he says, is the friendship not of doing deeds in common, but the f…
