Without further ado, then, here are Joel’s Seven Pieces of Free Advice for Computer Science College Students (worth what you paid for them): Learn how to write before graduating. The Problem With Too Much Comfort
When somebody tells you to relax, it’s probably because you make a bigger deal out of your problems than you should. Here’s some counterintuitive advice: you don’t have to relax yourself. Relax your problems instead.
Relaxation: Why the Next Best Option is the Best Option
Relaxation is the best way to mitigate analysis paralysis. An answer at least half as good as the perfect solution in less time is a more practical solution.

The Problem With Too Much Comfort
Life is regular when it’s too obvious. The root cause that makes it obvious is: too much comfort.

Towards Small-Scale Social
These days many of the best online social experiences happen in very small-scale environments. A few friends, a loose microcommunity, a cozy corner with the right vibes.
Towards Small-Scale Social
Not all of our experience in virtual space has to be so calculated, functional, profitable, or maximizing efficiency. There ought to be a greater appreciation of places that don't draw attention to themselves, that have no specific desired interaction, that don't pressure the visitor to be any certain way, and that simply communicate basic information from one person in the world to another. All of this tends to get lost in the process of making something "user-friendly."

I evoke the term 'handmade web' to refer to web pages coded by hand rather than by software; web pages made and maintained by individuals rather than by businesses or corporations; web pages which are provisional, temporary, or one-of-a-kind; web pages which challenge conventions of reading, writing, design, ownership, privacy, security, or identity.

I wanted to be cool about things. It’s funny to see now that what I find endearing about others is exactly their inability to be cool about things. I like people who care too much, who can’t stop caring at a reasonable interval.

Suffering, like energy, mass, and swag, is conserved. Even if you don’t personally mind sleeping late, you offload the costs onto people around you, either by not being present or worrying them. At the very least, be healthy for them.

There’s a wonderful line in the film Men Up. The lead character believes he knows the meaning of life: We’re all just walking each other home. On your way home (i.e., success, reward, love) the key is not knowing or sticking to any one path — at 18 I was certain I was going to be a pediatrician living in Santa Monica — but investing in relationships so you’ll know, no matter the route, there will be people walking with you.

Elizabeth Holmes famously said there was “no plan B.” Well, turns out there was a plan C, as she couldn’t fathom B. Plan B was a bright future after starting a firm with a bold vision. Sadly, her prototype, like those of several hundred other tech firms, didn’t work out. In America, we’d rather you go to jail than come home without your shield.
Quitting Time | No Mercy / No Malice
If success is the best thing, failing/quitting fast is the next best thing. Also, keep in mind that the market is bigger than any individual, and most of your success/failure is not your fault. Be humble when things work and willing to forgive yourself when they don’t. Again, I’m not disputing the importance of perseverance. Quitting isn’t the opposite of persevering, it’s the raw material. Dyson’s 5,126 failed prototypes were only possible because after each one, he shrugged, learned what he could, and put it aside to try again. That’s 5,126 little quits.
Quitting Time | No Mercy / No Malice
Grit is great. Perseverance is a virtue. But, narratively, it’s overrated. Greatness is a function not just of grit, but of talent, luck, where and when you are born … and knowing when to quit.

What the Netherlands’ problems reveal is the need for a global shift in the current approach. It’s not a matter of retracting our user-centred policy, but rather advocating for international recognition that the war on drugs is counterproductive
As the mayor of Amsterdam, I can see the Netherlands risks becoming a narco-state | Femke Halsema | The Guardian
Under international pressure, the Netherlands placed MDMA, which is known as a party drug and perceived as relatively harmless, under the Opium Act in 1988, classifying it as a hard drug. This shift inadvertently contributed to the profitability of illegal MDMA production and created a lucrative business model for criminal organisations, as evidenced by the estimated €18.9bn street value of annual ecstasy production in the Netherlands. This experience reveals how efforts to align with global drug prohibition trends can have counterproductive outcomes.

my best guess is that Americans may be overestimating the risk of conflict, particularly of an all-out invasion of Taiwan by China. Moreover, I worry that American anxiety about the risk of war with China may inadvertently exacerbate it.

ANI is considered “weak” AI, whereas the other two types are classified as “strong” AI. We define weak AI by its ability to complete a specific task, like winning a chess game or identifying a particular individual in a series of photos. Natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision, which let companies automate tasks and underpin chatbots and virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa, are examples of ANI. Computer vision is a factor in the development of self-driving cars. Stronger forms of AI, like AGI and ASI, incorporate human behaviors more prominently, such as the ability to inte…

If someone tried to remove a watermark by editing the text, they would not know which words to change. And even if they managed to change some of the special words, they would most likely only reduce the total percentage by a couple of points.

The most pernicious thing about p-values is that they’ve changed our language and thinking about science. Instead of being humble and doubtful about what science allows us to know, we have convinced ourselves that we have a fool proof reality detector and anything that passes that threshold is worthy of our attention.

The point of statistical techniques (at least according to Bayesians like me) is to capture and quantify those vague feelings we have when we look at data. In this framework, the notion that statistics tell us something raw data doesn’t is insane. It’s like saying that 5 by itself tells us more than 2+3.

When I read articles about AI, I’m intensely aware of the sci-fi tropes that Roose descries. But I also feel that such journalists fall victim to their own penchant for narrative. AI research is highly quantitative and non-narrative. Any attempt to “write a story” about AI will necessarily fail to describe some aspects of it.

Our laws reflect our values. What we hold dear, who we deem precious (i.e. who needs protection). We’ve decided the rule of law in the U.S. must be a warrior for corporations and old, wealthy investors.

The darkest side of our idolatry of innovators is that we become blind to the costs incurred by those who are least able to bear them — and we protect those who least need protection. It bears repeating. Holmes is going to prison because she defrauded investors — specifically, members of the Valley aristocracy and the global elite.
