No circumstance is so bizarre that it will force you to become someone you aren't - in fact, you will turn out to be exactly who you are.

YOU CAN WRITE IT ALL DOWN, YOU CAN PUT IT IN YOUR BOOK OF FACTS, BUT THE TRUTH IS NO ONE CAN EVER REALLY UNDERSTAND THE TANGLE OF EXPERIENCES AND PASSIONS THAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE

Third spaces, which include bars, parks, coffee shops, libraries, and even sidewalks, have been in decline for decades. Racism, classism, the climate crisis, overpolicing, a car-based economy, and the privatization and rising costs of amenities have all narrowed access to them.

Those echoes are opportunities for us to either make better decisions and grow into more mature versions of ourselves (shifting the spiral “up”) or to make worse decisions and regress (shifting the spiral “down.”)

“You will circle through some of the same issues over and over, each time at a different level. There is no such thing as being done with an artistic life. Frustrations and rewards exist at all levels on the path. Our aim here is to find the trail, establish our footing, and begin the climb.”

Because love takes you past the need for prestige—past rationality and diminishing marginal returns—into a room lit up purely by desire

But I’ve always loved the Feynman quote about studying hard “what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.” Refusing to view something as means to an end, being so devoted you’re thrust outside the usual calculus of value and optimization. That’s love: not expecting a return on your investment.

I don't choose my obsessions so much as stumble into their open arms.
on obsession
I try to inhabit a version of myself with no ego and no fear, in hopes that consistency will make it real; I try to love things without needing to hold onto them; I let my feelings in, knowing that with time they'll pass through me.
on obsession
I wanted to learn how to manage obsession: to be attached to things and not have them destroy me. I wanted to learn how to believe that nothing is the answer, because everything is the answer; that joy is not concentrated but diffuse, that it's in the air around me already, that what I have is what I need.
on obsession
Obsession is repetitive; passion is generative. Obsession is a way to redirect desire, to avoid the intensity of your emotions by channeling them into something else; passion is a way for you to fully integrate what you feel.

Relishing the company of people who sometimes make you feel, by comparison, uninformed, closed to new ideas, disordered, defensive, rigid, fearful, unambitious is an acquired skill. It kicks up shame. It humbles you. It dares you to grow. (unknown)

We’re encouraged to enumerate our flaws, systemically comb through our childhoods for neat, pert little stories that can explain how each of them came to be, and then destroy them

it’s that nothing is actually solved by intellectualizing and pathologizing every part of what we feel — and when we try, we’re usually sort of wrong anyway. Your emotions, by and large, are not a problem to be fixed in service of producing a better, more manageable, more loveable self. They just want to be felt.

But to extrapolate that reality into the idea that we shouldn’t want to tend to our loved ones, to receive them as flawed and imperfect people and care for them anyway, is a grave miscorrection. We all exist to save each other. There is barely anything else worth living for.

My problem is the positioning of a one-size-fits-all solution as the only way to become a good, functional, whole person — and the idea that one must be “whole” in order to love or be loved.
