Why did the great philosophers, who could write about the most difficult subjects, from death to pleasure, suddenly become so inept and awkward when contemplating fatherhood?

The capitalist state is deliberately not set up to support individuals who aren’t “productive” to the capitalist economy, to the point of ultimately turn this population of “surplus” into economic fuel for extractive state capacities. In this way, social murder—or organized abandonment, slow death—is component to capitalism itself; a crucial state capacity.

Is that really the meaning of life? Enjoyment be damned, I need a job in something I hate? (hyperbole here, since I know many people love the STEM fields as well). Are the humanities simply fun but not feasible? Luxuries for loveable loafers, but otherwise, irrelevant to those who need to hustle for a piece of the ever-vanishing pie?

And maybe that’s the real problem that Shapiro is trying to highlight: that we’ve learned to read solely for information rather than art. Reading has ceased to become an aesthetic pursuit that leads to wisdom and understanding and needs to be experience and enjoyed slowly, over time. Who has time to do that now? It’s onto the next podcast and tweet!

Virtue is something acquired, something cultivated, something known through experience and the cultivation of arête that stems from knowing that propels one into right and proper action based on that knowledge which produces habit. “You should know better,” is a phrase we’ve inherited from Aristotle’s ethical philosophy.

“It has never stopped being under construction,” Pardoen says about Notre Dame. “When it is returned to the public, it will be white, luminous...it can’t be at the same state as right before the fire.” The space has always been a changing one. Heritage, she’d said earlier, “is something that's alive.

ready to hand, is not fixed, nor is it bound to the object itself, but rather the solutions to the problem may be many and varied because they are located in involvement structures. And when the solutions is discovered it is the right solution, (even though it may be one of many) because it is premised on the structures of involvements that make up the world for us.

Involvements are what initially give a thing its meaning. The names we give to things are arbitrary and quite superfluous, ontologically speaking, they do not pertain to the meaning of an entity's Being. Although the names and substances seem important, it is only because they masks and are therefore mistaken for the importance of these involvement structures.

Context then always determines the significance of signs, and the particular context in which a sign functions is itself made comprehensible by a more general context. And we can extend that idea, for even a general context is only made comprehensible by an even more general context, and so on and so forth, right back to the origin of context itself...
