Yeah. It’s the in-between stuff, too. It’s living that life of being in that purgatory space. So much has been said about the immigrant experience, and being bicultural, but what that’s really like, to show that, felt private, and it still does. It feels really illicit to have to show that publicly. We spend our whole lives training ourselves to keep it tucked away, and now it’s coming out. It feels unprecedented and dangerous, which must mean on some level that it’s great.
Greta Lee and Steven Yeun Have an Emotionally X-Rated ConversationIt’s not a reflection of your direct life, but you went and experienced a thing and you’re showing it to all of us.
Greta Lee and Steven Yeun Have an Emotionally X-Rated Conversation“I can’t do this, I can’t show that, I’m allergic to myself in this form.” I’m fighting so much of my own biology, everything leading up to this, my life as a modern woman in America.
Greta Lee and Steven Yeun Have an Emotionally X-Rated Conversationit was terrifying. I’ve never been put to task in that way. Just showing yourself falling in love— that is tough. It’s humiliating, in reality. When you see someone fall- ing in love, it’s not beautiful—it’s cringy.
Greta Lee and Steven Yeun Have an Emotionally X-Rated ConversationRather than Ivagueness being a deficiency in our mode of describing the world, it would then be a necessary feature of any true description of it.
Can There Be Vague Objects?T is sometimes said that the world might itself be vague.
Can There Be Vague Objects?“My narrators are figuring it out; they haven’t arrived at a point where they have a tidy story to tell,” she said. Instead, they undergo a puzzling interaction and try to take it apart; then they move on to the next mysterious situation and take it apart, and in this way the story is propelled forward. There are events and reversals and other devices known to fiction, but nothing that could be preceded by “and then,” “all of a sudden,” “little did she know,” or “but everything was about to change.” No cliffhangers, but plenty of steep hills to climb down.
Katie Kitamura on Her New Book ‘Intimacies’With Intimacies, she wanted to write a novel that mirrored contemporary life’s anxieties and ambiguities without simply replicating those qualities and, in so doing, voided the whole point of novel-writing.
Katie Kitamura on Her New Book ‘Intimacies’“To be in the world right now is to have your mind occupied by four or five different things at once, three of which will not be resolved, and which will intersect but not perfectly,”
Katie Kitamura on Her New Book ‘Intimacies’That’s where my mindset is when I design, it’s like from an engineering perspective. I believe design is just good engineering. That’s why I tell my designers to always think like an engineer. So I set up really strict rules on how they are allowed to work. So for example, we’re only allowed to use six or eight colours in total, same with the typeface, we only write in lowercase with one font in a set of sizes that is in a system connected to a grid.
The founder of Teenage Engineering opens up to his creative spaceI don’t know anything about dating, but I know, at least, how I found someone like that.
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandLiving in cities, most of us don’t need to know if the rains are late this year, or when the bushwarblers will start warbling.
Small SeasonsFew tools have been as important to humanity as calendars.
On Small Seasons and Long Calendars – Ross ZurowskiThe way we interact with something — where we store it — also changes the way we consume it
Essay: The digital death of collectingIn the digital era, when everything seems to be a single click away, it’s easy to forget that we have long had physical relationships with the pieces of culture we consume.
Essay: The digital death of collectingIf you want to be loved, find something you love.
how to avoid half-heartedness - by Ava - bookbear expresspeople come alive when they’re serious about what they love
how to avoid half-heartedness - by Ava - bookbear expressMy answer is that if you tolerate too much half-heartedness, it’s probably because you’re half-hearted.
how to avoid half-heartedness - by Ava - bookbear expressa lot of people want to be but they don’t want to do
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressHere’s what I know: if someone’s much better than you at something, they probably try much harder. You probably underestimate how much harder they try.
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressWe are all Frankenstein monsters—patchwork quilts of past experiences—trying to pass ourselves off as whole and cohesive things.
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressI’ve allowed myself to sink into the spaces of slowness.
Listening to the whispers - by Meredith Anne WhiteDon’t surround yourself with “smarter” people. The trick is to surround yourself with people who are free in ways you’re not. (Ribbonfarm)
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixI don't write out of what I know; I write out of what I wonder. I think most artists create art in order to explore, not to give the answers. Poetry and art are not about answers to me; they are about questions. You are a curator of curiosities, not an expert. It becomes a lot easier to share this way, because you’re just taking someone else along on the ride.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixSelf assurance is generated on the level of the soul. Less ego, more acceptance. Integration of shadow. More openness to self. Ease of giving and receiving love without expectation or obligation.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixI made the mistake of thinking I was quite like anyone else, of trying to live like other people. It took me a while to realize that simply wasn’t true. I had my own needs, and I had to live like me.”
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixA friend asked me once, who do you idolize and why? I told them I have no idols I would like to be, but there are specific traits I admire from people. Namely: elegance, gentleness, drive, focus, unselfconsciousness, charisma. But most of all: internal confidence.
internal confidence - by Nicole - startingfromnixHave patience and a little more self-trust. Surrender yourself to this big, glorious, dream-filled dance we call life. Everything exists on your timeline – you just can’t see it quite yet.
you can have everything - by Nicole - startingfromnixThe art of living is based on rhythm. By acceptance of all aspects of life, good and bad, right and wrong, yours and mine, the static, defensive life, which is what most people are cursed with, is converted into a dance, ‘the dance of life,’ metamorphosis. (Acceptance) is the first thing any one has to learn in order to live. It is extremely difficult, because it means surrender, full surrender.
you can have everything - by Nicole - startingfromnixyou can have everything you want, you just can’t have it all at once
you can have everything - by Nicole - startingfromnixfor the world to be interesting, you have to be manipulating it all the time. This is true. If you know which strings to pull, whose shit to shovel, which rules to break, the world can absolutely be fine-tuned to what you want it to be.
you can have everything - by Nicole - startingfromnixbecause it is not so, we are “as much smitten with wonder at their freedom from inner restraint as with awe at the energy of their outward performances.”
Meta is Murder — The Charisma of Leadersthere is a frustrating gap between them, such that we’re not in accord with our own values, no matter how badly we wish to be. Our moral commitments are overwhelmed routinely, and our behavior subverts, distracts, and disappoints us.
Meta is Murder — The Charisma of LeadersAsk your acquaintances, “Hey, I want to leave my house more, are there any cool events you’re going to soon?”
Milan CvitkovicDon’t drink (alcohol), even when you’re expected to
Milan CvitkovicI think airing your mud is also the only way to stop buying your own bullshit. See, we need other people to help us spot our bullshit beliefs
communication - by Molly Mielke - Mind Mudmy silence itself wasn’t valiant: it was purely because I was terrified of exposing my imperfections.
communication - by Molly Mielke - Mind Mud“When I focus on the past, that's my ego. When I focus on the future, it's my pride. I try to focus on the moment… in the present. That's humility.”
(self) concept - by Molly Mielke - Mind MudI think the point of life is to feel deeply — mostly good stuff like love and pride, but also some bad stuff that broadens your spectrum of experience and allows you to better appreciate the good.
(self) concept - by Molly Mielke - Mind MudI’m at my most courageous on the page because interrogating my feelings with words feels justified and purposeful in the case that it helps someone else understand the mess of the human condition.
(self) concept - by Molly Mielke - Mind Mud“He was bookish, she was not; he was theoretical, she political. She called a rose a rose. He called it an accumulation of cultural and biological constructions circulating around the mutually attracting binary poles of nature/artifice.”
