Export-led growth premised on infrastructure investment seeks to fuel an economic surge by leveraging relatively low labor costs to capture global manufacturing market share.
Africa’s Infrastructure-Led Growth Experiment Is Faltering. It Is Time to Focus on Agriculture - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Over the last three decades, a third wave of Asian countries—including Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Vietnam—have leapfrogged African countries in terms of per capita income using export-led manufacturing with similarly deficient infrastructure.

It’s important to note that there is very little commercial farming in the DRC, with the most important export being coffee. Most plantations are owned by foreign organizations or elites within the nation, providing a few jobs but keeping money in the hands of the already wealthy. The country lacks access to tools like farming grants and loans, fertilizers and pesticides, and infrastructure like silos and tractors that have transformed the way farming exists in most of the world.
The Global Food Crisis: Addressing Disease with Computer Vision | by Alexander Yevchenko | Medium
There’s much room for the expansion of agricultural fields into previously unused lands to provide sustenance for both the population of the country and to bolster the economy off of exports, rather than being reliant on costly imports.
The Global Food Crisis: Addressing Disease with Computer Vision | by Alexander Yevchenko | Medium
The little food they’re able to produce without knowledge of modern farming techniques and a lack of adequate fertilizers and pesticides isn’t enough to feed their families, and must therefore look to imported foods to supplement their diets, which is often too expensive to afford.
The Global Food Crisis: Addressing Disease with Computer Vision | by Alexander Yevchenko | Medium
This is due to the fact that most of the population engages in subsistence farming, planting crops like bananas, peanuts and cassava to feed their own families.
The Global Food Crisis: Addressing Disease with Computer Vision | by Alexander Yevchenko | Medium
As a result of further competition, importing nations will benefit from lower prices, which in turn lowers food acquisition costs for their citizens and allows them to increase imports to adequately support the needs of burgeoning populations.

For example, the prices of staple foods in sub-Saharan Africa surged by an average of 23.9% between 2020–2022, leaving 140 million people on the continent acutely hungry.

Land managers and fire authorities prioritise areas close to communities or known spots where large fires can start, including along roadsides where the risks of accidental ignition from the public are highest.

The shears require calculating the orthogonal vector to the vector spanning from the center of the plant to the prune point. The servo that controls cut angle is then activated to position the shears along the orthogonal vector.

For a quieter, more precise and delicate pruning tool, we motorized a pair of Japanese topiary shears. A pair of Niwaki Topiary Shears [37] were fastened directly to the FarmBot’s gantry rails. A YANSHON Digital 360° servo motor is able to close the shears by winding a high strength steel cable attached to one handle of the shears onto a spool; the shears reopen with a spring mechanism when the cable is unwound. This assembly is mounted to a 2-axis servo gimbal (using BETU Digital 270° servo motors). The gimbal is able to position the shears vertically, horizontally, or at any intermediate ang…

The US now experiences, on average, a billion-dollar weather or climate disaster every three weeks.
Fifth National Climate Assessment
Annual US greenhouse gas emissions fell 12% between 2005 and 2019. This trend was largely driven by changes in electricity generation: coal use has declined, while the use of natural gas and renewable technologies has increased, leading to a 40% drop in emissions from the electricity sector. Since 2017, the transportation sector has overtaken electricity generation as the largest emitter. {11.1, 13.1, 32.1; Figures 32.1, 32.3}

This wasn’t always the case. For much of American history, municipal laws restricted where food could be sold, and who could do the selling. In early America, the market was literally a farmer’s market — places set aside for producers to sell directly to consumers. Wholesalers and other middlemen were regarded with suspicion, as agents who increased the price of food and profited at the expense of ordinary citizens.

Researchers at AIFARMS have found that, by training a neural net on datasets collected by both soil and satellite sensors, they can track cover-cropping yields across entire growing regions. By interpreting images that use the entire electromagnetic spectrum, the model also enables remote monitoring of organic carbon and nitrogen levels in soil (SOC).

A coating of fine gray hairs covers each leaf, imparting a frostiness that gives big sagebrush its characteristic silvery green color. Run your hands along a branch of big sagebrush and you’ll find its leaves feel as soft and smooth as fine suede.
