Parental decision-making and minor children. A parent may not be permitted in certain situations to consent to non-treatment of his or her minor child, particularly where the decision would significantly impact and perhaps result in death if the minor child did not receive treatment. Examples include parents who refuse medical treatment on behalf of their minor children because of the parents’ social or religious views, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christian Scientists. The litigation process: a brief summary. There are essentially three distinct phases to the litigation process: (1) initiation, (2) pre-trial, and (3) trial and post-trial. The possibility that the parties will reach an agreement about the legal claims before or during trial, known as a settlement, means that the vast majority of initiated claims do not go through all three phases.

Should your current preferences be strictly applied to future situations or serve as a general guide to your spokesperson or family member(s)? In the event that you are dying, where do you want to receive your health care? Some people have more concerns about the way they will die or dying than death itself. Do you have any fears or concerns about this? Are there any life-sustaining treatments that you know you would want to receive regardless of the circumstances, or would not want to receive under any circumstances? Advance care planning is a process to help patients with decision-making capacity guide future health care decisions in the event that they become unable to participate directly in their care. The process, when accomplished comprehensively, involves four steps: (1) thinking through one's relevant values and preferences, (2) talking about one's values and preferences with one’s spokesperson, close family members and health care providers, (3) documenting them with an advance directive, and (4) reviewing them periodically and updating them as needed.

Single-payer system is a health care system in which one entity – a single payer – collects all health care fees and pays for all health care costs. Proponents of a single-payer system argue that because there are fewer entities involved in the health care system, the system can avoid an enormous amount of administrative waste. Instead, all health care providers in a single-payer system would bill one entity for their services. Within a single-payer system, all citizens would receive high-quality, comprehensive medical care PLUS the freedom to choose providers to a greater extent than most net…
