He had to be somebody, and so he became a retired impresario who dabbled in money-lending, lawsuits, and petty usury. It was as this character that he wrote the rather dry last will and testament with which we are familiar, having purposefully expunged from it every trace of emotion and every literary flourish. When friends visited him from London, he went back to playing the role of poet for their benefit.
Everything and NothingHe started out assuming that everyone was just like him; the puzzlement of a friend to whom he had confided a little of his emptiness revealed his error and left him with the lasting impression that the individual should not diverge from the species.
Everything and NothingI will shave my head and give my earthly things to the owner of my favorite bar. I will move to another city. I will find a new favorite bar. I will stop using the word body in both my speech and my writing. I will take the bus. I will take the train. I will take seriously the advice of my father. I will become the king of this country. I will drink its water and water its drinks. I will give my nights to people less foreign than me, smoking with them beneath fluorescent lights and the glow of expensive liquor. I will feel the way I feel. I will finish my novel and sell it so as not to be tied…
Catapult | The Five-Year Plan | Steven DuongBut I've begun talking to the stars. They don't move around so much. They're optimists. And they've performed steadily for many years. Venus is my favorite. Venus, like night, is always available. And all of you who know me, all of you who think you know me, I'm never coming around here, never again, no more. Brando? And there goes the tram to Roosevelt Isle. When I was invisible, I thought spotting the train meant good luck. But at this point it means the ambassadors are going, home. The ambassadors have left. The ambassadors are no more.
