I am tied back into a lived reality, which is rigid, and do not float off into theory, where I have a solid track record of fooling myself.
How to think in writing - by Henrik Karlssonunfolding a claim through an explanation is progress. Even if the explanation is wrong.
How to think in writing - by Henrik KarlssonWhat seemed right in my head fell to pieces on the page.
How to think in writing - by Henrik Karlssonthe fact that developers are easily able to collaborate to view incidents and provide context in GitGuardian’s enterprise offering builds a lot of trust
Defining A Software Supply Chain Security Platform & Exploring New Techniques, Part 2Identifying the responsible user (developer), leak stage, and exposed secret location is challenging due to a lack of knowledge or non-adherence to best practices.
Defining A Software Supply Chain Security Platform & Exploring New Techniques, Part 2bridging that data to prioritization to action gap for the relevant stakeholder
Software Supply Chain Security (Part 1)While this approach produces accurate results for executed calls, it carries the risk of false negatives unless every single execution path is tested.
Software Supply Chain Security (Part 1)as the developer, you’re the final line of defense.
App Developers: Start with Security | Federal Trade Commissionit and alternatives like Google Code focused on software distribution to end users, not code collaboration.
How GitHub monopolized code hostingthe importance of the result is not the measure of the importance of the problem.
You and Your ResearchMost great people also have 10 to 20 problems they regard as basic and of great importance, and which they currently do not know how to solve.
You and Your ResearchConfidence in yourself, then, is an essential property. Or, if you want to, you can call it “courage.”
You and Your ResearchYou need to work on the right problem at the right time and in the right way—what I have been calling “style.”
You and Your ResearchSo yes, you need to keep up. You need to keep up more to find out what the problems are than to read to find the solutions.
You and Your ResearchI tried to go with people who had great ability so I could learn from them and who would expect great results out of me.
You and Your ResearchI picked my people carefully with whom I did or whom I didn’t brainstorm because the sound absorbers are a curse.
You and Your ResearchIn developing a product for developers, it’s crucial to check one key detail: Does a solution already exist?
The Mom Test in Software DevelopmentIt took investment traction from Heroku, Atlassian, Stripe, Twilio, and Sendgrid to help open up the market.
How GitHub monopolized code hostingRather than focusing on ads as SourceForge had, or enterprise sales as Perforce did, the GitHub founders quickly began selling individual tier subscriptions for hosting private repos.
How GitHub monopolized code hostingIn this example, using GPT-4 to code and edit the app is what enabled the feeling of malleability for me. It feels magical describing an app and having it appear on-screen within seconds.
Codifying a ChatGPT workflow into a malleable GUII’ve found that having the button there encourages me to ask for explanations more often. Before, when I was doing the translations in ChatGPT, I would need to explicitly think to write a follow-up message asking for an explanation. Now I have a button reminding me to do it
Codifying a ChatGPT workflow into a malleable GUIWhen creation is slow and verification is fast, it’s a sweet spot for using an LLM.
Codifying a ChatGPT workflow into a malleable GUIA key point is that making this personal GUI is only worth it because GPT also lowers the cost of making and iterating on the GUI
Codifying a ChatGPT workflow into a malleable GUIIn security, a new company, it’s a little bit of a chicken in the egg problem because you want people to use you, but no one trusts you until other people use you. So how do you get around that? You can do open source because engineers are tinkerers and they wanna play with stuff.
Panther Labs' Jack Naglieri on Cloud-Native SIEM and Self-Growthit’s important to fully understand where your business is going to capture value, and how all stakeholders are going to react to that change in the flow
True Product Market Fit is a Minimum Viable Company | by Ann Miura-Ko | The Startup | MediumUltimately I find this metric to be the most predictive of whether or not the product will drastically improve customers’ lives.
True Product Market Fit is a Minimum Viable Company | by Ann Miura-Ko | The Startup | Mediuma startup must also consider the implicit costs to a customer that come along with any new product, including money (e.g. the product’s price), time (onboarding/changing habits), and effort (learning to use your product).
True Product Market Fit is a Minimum Viable Company | by Ann Miura-Ko | The Startup | Mediumeven though devs could do their own deployments and debug pipeline breakages, they would often defer to the ops release specialist
Full Cycle Developers at Netflix — Operate What You Build | by Netflix Technology Blog | Netflix TechBlogI'm just following the path of least resistance; depth is a byproduct.
The Bus Ticket Theory of GeniusIt's harder to find time for work after you have kids, but that's the easy part. The real change is that you don't want to.
The Bus Ticket Theory of Geniusas with any hedge, you're decreasing reward when you decrease risk. If you forgo working on what you like in order to follow some more conventionally ambitious path, you might miss something wonderful that you'd otherwise have discovered.
The Bus Ticket Theory of Geniusit's more promising if you're creating something, rather than just consuming something someone else creates. It's more promising if something you're interested in is difficult, especially if it's more difficult for other people than it is for you.
The Bus Ticket Theory of Geniusthe second feature of this kind of obsession: there is no point.
The Bus Ticket Theory of GeniusWhen startups consume incumbents, they usually start by serving some small but important market that the big players ignore.
How to Get Startup Ideasif the beachhead consists of people doing something lots more people will be doing in the future, then it's probably big enough no matter how small it is.
How to Get Startup IdeasBecause a good idea should seem obvious, when you have one you'll tend to feel that you're late.
How to Get Startup IdeasYou can also be at the leading edge as a user.
How to Get Startup Ideassomething a small number of people want a large amount. Choose the latter. Not all ideas of that type are good startup ideas, but nearly all good startup ideas are of that type.
How to Get Startup IdeasWhat do users want? What new things could you build for them?
Billionaires Buildthe sort of early adopters a successful startup wants as its initial users are the hardest to fool. The best this kind of founder can hope for is to keep the edifice of deception tottering along until some acquirer can be tricked into buying it. But that kind of acquisition is never very big.
Billionaires Buildgenuine interest in the problem, and unwillingness to work for someone else. The last two are more powerful motivators than the first two.
Billionaires BuildWhat keeps them working is the same thing that keeps anyone else working when they could stop if they wanted to: that there's nothing else they'd rather do.
Billionaires BuildCompetitors are rarely what kills startups. Poor execution does.
Billionaires BuildThe best thing you can do in a YC interview is to teach the partners about your users. So if you want to prepare for your interview, one of the best ways to do it is to go talk to your users and find out exactly what they're thinking. Which is what you should be doing anyway.
Billionaires BuildIf I had to decide whether to fund startups based on a single question, it would be "How do you know people want this?"
Billionaires BuildThe crucial feature of the initial market is that it exist. That may seem like an obvious point, but the lack of it is the biggest flaw in most startup ideas.
Billionaires BuildUsually the path to a huge market is by growing a small market.
Billionaires Build"Make something people want." A big company can to some extent force unsuitable products on unwilling customers, but a startup doesn't have the power to do that. A startup must sing for its supper, by making things that genuinely delight its customers. Otherwise it will never get off the ground.
Billionaires BuildThe more important thing, actually, is to find something that you are personally passionate about, because any good company takes a long time to build
How the most successful B2B startups came up with their original ideaThe Sociopaths know that the only way to make an organization capable of survival is to buffer the intense chemistry between the producer-Losers and the leader-Sociopaths with enough Clueless padding in the middle to mitigate the risks of business.
