This reminds me of a common fallacy we see in unreliable systems, where people build the happy path with the idea that the happy path is the “real” work, and that error handling can be tacked on later. For reliable systems, error handling is more work than the happy path. The same thing is true for large services -- all of this stuff that people don't think of as “real” work is more work than the core service3.
I could do that in a weekend! My reasoning is that even though I have significantly less time to write and think about writing, since I’ve been writing full-time for two years, I’ll be able to make room for it. So far I think that has proven accurate (or at least, close enough). However, I am really tired all the time!
do what you love but have a contingency plan - by AvaBut the same problem remained: I did not work crazy hours, but still, I barely wrote for five years. I don’t think I wrote more than 1000 words a year from when I was 19 to when I was 23. Even though I technically had enough hours to write, I did not have the mindspace. I was stressed all the time. I never ever felt inspired.
do what you love but have a contingency plan - by AvaFor me, so many love stories have started with a second of appraisal, an impression that became a conversation and then a feeling.
bookbear expressI think that when we’re healthy we’re sensitive to feedback but confident in our own value. Which means we can risk rejection without beating ourselves up, but we also understand when we should improve what we’re putting out into the world.
