those habituated to a lack of pleasure seem to derive more pleasure from despising pleasure
DIOGENES OF SINOPEyou can only ever be yourself, so now’s the time to learn to love exactly who you are.
Matthew Jordan’s review of On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of PsychotherapyMy goal is to focus ruthlessly on being myself, be open to learning what my strengths are through feedback from others, and avoid the temptation to enter crowded fields at all costs. If I focus on being myself, the notion of competition disappears.
Matthew Jordan’s review of On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of PsychotherapyYou need to look at your blank canvas, staring at your personal style of painting, and have the audacity to say, "wait, real artists don’t paint like that, but I suppose I do”, and then believe in yourself enough to put that out into the world. That’s what makes you a real artist.
Matthew Jordan’s review of On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of PsychotherapyThey may not be experts on the subject material we talk about in class (in this case, the history of science), but they are the world’s leading authorities on one subject: their own experience. If you can lucidly and thoughtfully communicate your own experience, you are by definition saying something original, because no one else is you.
Matthew Jordan’s review of On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of PsychotherapyAmbition is about giving a shit. It's about seeing beyond the hills. Beyond what is asked of you. It involves that which Kierkegaard called the "Infinite", the part of you that yearns to transcend the current order of things. To bring into existence all that doesn’t necessarily exist but could possibly be.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahWhat of the costs of education? What have you lost out on? Well, first about twenty thousand hours of your youth. That’s okay. You weren’t using that golden time of perfect health and halcyon memories when you had more true capacity for creativity and imagination and happiness than you ever will again anyway. If you hadn’t had your teachers to tell you that you needed to be making a collage showing your feelings about The Scarlet Letter, you probably would have wasted your childhood seeing a world in a grain of sand or Heaven in a wild flower or something dumb like that.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star CodexBut don’t let your schadenfreude get the better of you.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star CodexI’d like to thank whoever figured out how to include URLs in speeches, by the way. That was the best invention.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star CodexBut don’t worry, I’m sure the nice folks at Chase-Bear-Goldman-Sallie-Manhattan-Stearns-Sachs-Mae-FEDGOV will be happy to forgive your debt if you mention you weren’t entirely happy with the purchase. You did hold out for the satisfaction-guaranteed offer, right? No? Uh oh.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star CodexEven more than most young people, you’ve had the privilege of getting to watch your dreams implode in real time right before your eyes.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star CodexSo, do these children do worse than their peers at public school? Yes, they do. By one grade level.
SSC Gives A Graduation Speech | Slate Star Codex“We are not sending our son to prison.”
Something Was Wrong | Don't Worry About the VaseI heard myself talking. I said “Join the circle. Don’t you want to bow to social pressure?”
Something Was Wrong | Don't Worry About the VaseMaybe, if we drill students that words don’t count, only anticipation-controllers, the student will not get stuck on “Heat conduction? No? Maybe heat convection? That’s not it either?” Maybe then, thinking the phrase “heat conduction” will lead onto a genuinely helpful path
Guessing the Teacher's PasswordIn the school system, it’s all about verbal behavior, whether written on paper or spoken aloud. Verbal behavior gets you a gold star or a failing grade. Part of unlearning this bad habit is becoming consciously aware of the difference between an explanation and a password.
Guessing the Teacher's PasswordThis is not a hypothesis about the metal plate. This is not even a proper belief. It is an attempt to guess the teacher’s password.
Guessing the Teacher's PasswordMaybe you could avoid handing students knowledge on a silver platter: show students different versions of physics equations that looked plausible, and ask them to figure out which was the correct one, or invent experiments that would distinguish between alternatives.
Two More Things to Unlearn from School - LessWrongStudents learn the habit that eating consists of putting food into mouth; the exams can't test for chewing or swallowing, and so they starve.
Two More Things to Unlearn from School - LessWronghe entertained himself by figuring out how to break into the safes that contained top-secret research.
The best teacher I never had | Bill GatesHe loved to play the bongos.
The best teacher I never had | Bill GatesFeynman wasn’t famous just for being a great teacher and a world-class scientist; he was also quite a character.
The best teacher I never had | Bill GatesI have led a toothless life, he thought. A toothless life. I have never bitten into anything. I was waiting. I was reserving myself for later on—and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone.
"am I wasting my 20s?" - by Nicole - startingfromnixNow I realize we’re always losing each other regardless — the old versions of us never last.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixA web allows things to fall through, like a sieve. Some things are not meant to be caught. The things that are meant to be caught and held will nourish us.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixLike love. If you’ve never felt it, you’ll think it’s impossible. When you do, you’ll realize: it is hard to find, but it is everywhere. You just have to look.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixRealizing someone is beautiful in a way no one you've ever met is beautiful and because of that they've expanded your understanding of beauty forever.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixDon’t surround yourself with “smarter” people. The trick is to surround yourself with people who are free in ways you’re not.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixNever get 8 hours of sleep, you don't need it if most of your day is just spent sitting around.
Bad Advice · JudahPerhaps even worse, you underestimate yourself. Yes, that's a cliché. But I've found that growing up is just the process of realizing all the clichés are true. Sue me.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahI care far less for what you've achieved in these years than for what you can do from here on out. The frontier is as large as you believe it to be. Good luck, everyone.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahAs a species, predictions are not our strong suit. If I am to make one, I might as well make it hopeful.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahFighting for status, thinking it to be survival. Stamping on our own faces for all eternity. Living in cages of our own making.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahWhether it be the simple act of loving your neighbor, or fixing your community. Do whatever it takes to be the human in the system.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahDo not let the seeming tininess of your effort be swallowed up by the specter of an unchanging enormity. Do not let hopelessness be your response to stifled progress. Again, and forever, I ask you to brave.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahI promise you, when they started out, most of them were just some guy. They just happened to care very, very much. They cared enough that seeming like an idiot for a decade or so was nothing to be discouraged by.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahDoing what you can, and then just a little bit better. Do not rely on your neighbor to fill the gap. That’s how we got here in the first place.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahBecause I've found, despite all my personal cynicism (and there’s a lot of it), that people really do matter. That the things that don’t scale count in ways that transcend estimation, and that the only efforts that go in vain are those which are not sustained.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahListen to people who tell you to embrace foolhardy ventures the same way you would listen to a newly-minted lottery winner. And look at the ones that say those are the only ways to make a difference with pure skepticism.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by JudahWhat do you even know, children that you are? You think you know yourself, yet you spend half your day wrestling your shadow. You're worried about the job market, but you have no clue what it really is like. You see the narrow end of a cone, and spend your energies trying to fit through.
A Speech I would Like To Give Undergrads - by Judahall i can say is, i’m a writer. i like writing. and i’ll do it wherever i go, no matter who i become.
Inbox | Substackthe thing about english is it’s a lot of reading and analyzing other people’s works, and then writing your own analysis of those works. that’s not what i want to do with my life. i want to be the one making those works. i want to be the one sharing my perspectives of situations and tying all the ideas together with some fancy metaphor or simile or whatever.
Inbox | Substacki never expected it to become better than it was before. i never expected to feel so happy. it feels like the sun is shining on me, all the time, even as i write this trapped indoors. like i stepped out from a dark room after a long time, but it’s not blinding. it’s warm.
Inbox | SubstackIt’s our flaws that make us unique. That’s why nobody likes perfect people. They’re perfectly boring.
I Want To Read Your Bad Writing.. Gimme it. | by Astris C | Mediumbeing judged as a writer is a good thing! It means that people give a damn about what you have to say.
I Want To Read Your Bad Writing.. Gimme it. | by Astris C | MediumIt’s the ideas that you hide from the world that I’m curious about.
I Want To Read Your Bad Writing.. Gimme it. | by Astris C | MediumIt’s our bad writings that reveal ourselves at our most vulnerable.
I Want To Read Your Bad Writing.. Gimme it. | by Astris C | MediumConversations make life better. I just need to take the first step.
"You know nothing”: a conversational mindsetBe first, because—not all times, but most times—it comes in your favor.
"You know nothing”: a conversational mindsetYou don’t really know what’s going on. You have no idea what the person is going through, and there’s probably a ton of assumptions you’ve baked into your interpretation of the situation that might be challenged if you sat with the person and heard their story. They are probably doing their best with the card they were dealt in this moment, and it’s likely that they are no “worse” or “better” than you are.
