Tests just like an orgasm, are very easy to fake (Did I just write this?).
Writing clean JavaScript tests with the BASIC principles | by Yoni Goldberg | MediumDid you ever think that maybe we thought about that, and it’s a feature, not a bug, that we don’t have it?
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerFor the first time since I was a kid, I have really been able, in the last few years, to take more time to (A) just do nothing with people that I love, and (B) marvel at everything in life and figure out how to look at things for the first time again. That has been a source of great beauty.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with Tylerhow much the cost of energy correlates with the quality of life.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerThe most important thing you can get to be a founder is to pick your parents well.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with Tylerincrease the level of high-skill immigration.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerThe argument against a universal basic income that I am most sympathetic to is that it is a good reason to lower immigration, and I think increasing immigration — particularly high-skill immigration — into the US is one of the most important policy things we can do.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerBut if you’re competing with yourself, and all you’re trying to do is — for the own self-satisfaction and for also the impact you have on the world and the duty you feel to do that — be the best possible version you can, there is no limit to how far that can drive someone to perform.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with Tylermarginal cost is zero
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerThe most expensive investing mistake in the world to make is to be a pessimist, and it’s a common one. I think that’s actually the most common mistake to make in life.
Sam Altman on Loving Community, Hating Coworking, and the Hunt for Talent (Ep. 61 - Live in SF) | Conversations with TylerAnd one of the footnotes was, you know, one of the positive things about finance might be that it gives a sort of venting for talented people who just like to play zero sum or negative sum games. And that otherwise, it would have been used up in a war. But this is a there's no wars, they would be doing something else destructive in our world. And if we can just put them in front of a trading screen and make them, you know, get the get the microsecond efficiency of some like equity market better, it's like better than anything else that could be doing with that mentality.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyAnd I think everyone should just be doing the thing that they like, absolutely have to do, whatever that is, that would make me happy in the world is if everyone was just like, yeah, leaning into their obsession.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyLike, there's so many people that are just being quietly funded that just don't talk about it. I do actually think like the model of patronage is very alive and well right now. It's just not super obvious.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyAnd, you know, there's usually good reasons why we don't, things don't run the way they did before.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyThere is the problem of value drift in charities, but it's a very particular kind of value drift, right? So there's famously conquest second law, that any institution that is not constitutionally and explicitly a right wing becomes left wing over time
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyBut you know, you meet so many people that are being funded by the same person, like just going out and sort of aggressively like arming the rebels is a more sort of like, yeah, just like distributed decentralized way of thinking about like spreading one's power, instead of just starting a fund. Instead of just starting a foundation.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyAnd in a weird, you know, you're always told to write very clearly, you're told to write succinctly, but like, it's actually in a weird way, you can be much more effective by being very long winded and not obvious in what you're saying
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & Philanthropyvery starry eyed about the power of like, hyper democratic regimes. And it turned out like, that just like doesn't work in practice. And so like, how is CryptoGhost or like Square that? I'm just, yeah, very curious to see what happened.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyAnd then you can kind of get to the point when you have enough of an active community that maybe that leader takes a step back and lets other people take over.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyAnd in the end, you just have like, you know, one or a small handful of people that are actually doing all the work while everyone else is kind of like screaming around them.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyI guess that ideas are maybe some sort of like sentient, like, concept or virus that operates outside of us. And we are just sort of like the vessels through which like ideas flow. So in that sense, you know, it's not really about any one person, but I do think I think I tend to lean like in terms of sort of like, where does creative, like, creative effort come from? I do think a lot of it comes much more from like a single individual than it does from with some of the crowds.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropySo control over media, it's, I guess it's a bigger meme now.
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & Philanthropya part of what motivates altruism, not obviously all of it, but part of it is that, yeah, you influence and power
Nadia Asparouhova - Tech Elites, Democracy, Open Source, & PhilanthropyThe problem with the Bootleggers is that they win. The Baptists are naive ideologues, the Bootleggers are cynical operators, and so the result of reform movements like these is often that the Bootleggers get what they want – regulatory capture, insulation from competition, the formation of a cartel – and the Baptists are left wondering where their drive for social improvement went so wrong.
Why AI Will Save the World | Andreessen HorowitzThis is one of the beautiful and painful parts of building a company–at some point, your comfort zone becomes the bottleneck in your business.
When You Plateau, So Does Your Company - No Small Plans - Everyinstead of attempting to understand the inner states of first-year Harvard students, we should study those living at what Maslow called the furthest reaches of human nature.
attending to the other - by Jasmine Wang 🌱People can sense care and can sense carelessness. This relates to respect for each other and carelessness is personally offensive.
when the fun things are also hard - by Nix 🕊I have led a toothless life, he thought. A toothless life. I have never bitten into anything. I was waiting. I was reserving myself for later on—and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone.
"am I wasting my 20s?" - by Nicole - startingfromnixit might be wise to tell them that tediousness is not the defining quality of work, and indeed that the reason they have to work on dull stuff now is so they can work on more interesting stuff later.
How to Do What You LoveWhy is it conventional to pretend to like what you do? The first sentence of this essay explains that. If you have to like something to do it well, then the most successful people will all like what they do.
How to Do What You LoveTherefore, we must travel upwind and pursue undergraduate degrees in broader fields that focus on first principles. Physics, math, and philosophy are great examples of this. If you want to build things like me, I'd extend this to any engineering major as well. Engineering majors can easily pick up computer science (and use it all the time) but the opposite is not true3
Don't Major in Computer Science - by Varun ShenoyJack tells Ennis, “We could a had a good life together, a fuckin real good life.” The existence he has is spoiled by the one he doesn’t.
What If You Could Do It All Over? | The New YorkerEventually, he meets a version of himself: an apparitional Brydon, with a forbidding face and two missing fingers, who strides forward in “a rage of personality.” Watching him, Brydon faints. He wakes with his head cradled in Alice’s lap, and realizes that he loves her: better this life than that one!
What If You Could Do It All Over? | The New Yorker“While growth realizes, it narrows,” Miller writes. “Plural possibilities simmer down.” This is painful, but it’s an odd kind of pain—hypothetical, paradoxical. Even as we regret who we haven’t become, we value who we are. We seem to find meaning in what’s never happened. Our self-portraits use a lot of negative space.
What If You Could Do It All Over? | The New Yorker“The thought that I might have become someone else is so bland that dwelling on it sometimes seems fatuous,” the literary scholar Andrew H. Miller writes, in “On Not Being Someone Else: Tales of Our Unled Lives” (Harvard).

Staring into the abyss as a core life skillThis suggests that a critical part of being effective at staring into the abyss is timing. If you do it too little, you’ll end up taking too long to make important life improvements; but if you do it too often, you might end up not investing enough in being great at your current job or relationship because you’re too focused on the prospect of next one.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillrepeatedly confront hard decisions
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillAnother abyss-staring strategy I’ve found useful is to talk to someone else.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillIt’s common for people stay in these jobs for a surprisingly long time, even when the job market in their field is very hot and they could easily find a better position somewhere else.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillWhile I’m sure that finance and consulting are the right career choice for some elite college graduates, I’d be surprised if it was the best choice for nearly 50% of them.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skilljust that they don’t work effectively on solving that problem—
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillwithout really grappling with that fact until their final year
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillmaking effective life decisions and having novel insights require you to figure out non-obvious true things about the world, which are sometimes uncomfortable or scary, and therefore you’ll only figure them out if you’re good at staring into the abyss.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillwrote a great description of how he came to stare into the abyss and realize that a powerful AI wouldn’t automatically share human goals:
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillDrew was extremely willing to tackle uncomfortable decisions head-on—“should we not have hired this person?” “Should we pivot away from this business that is pretty good but not great?”—and every time, it was immediately obvious that the decision he made was a big improvement.
Staring into the abyss as a core life skilllock yourself into a sub-optimal future life trajectory
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillacknowledge that you were very wrong about something in the past, and perhaps wasted a bunch of time based on that (e.g. dating the wrong person or praying to the wrong god).
Staring into the abyss as a core life skillthinking reasonably about things that are uncomfortable to contemplate, like arguments against your religious beliefs, or in favor of breaking up with your partner
