The richest relationships are lifeboats, but they are also submarines that descend to the darkest and most disquieting places, to the unfathomed trenches of the soul where our deepest shames and foibles and vulnerabilities live, where we are less than we would like to be.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixAnyone I’ve ever dated will tell you I am hyperindependent and a little stubborn. Last year, I prided myself on being so good at being alone. Armored myself with solitude. I’ve changed my mind on that recently — there’s something really tender and important about being deeply intertwined with the people in your life. This year, instead of my impulse to control, to hide, to put on a mask, I’ve been experiencing and rewiring: Maybe softness is better. Presence is better. Maybe I’ll try again.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixThe goal of an antilibrary is not to collect books you have read so you can proudly display them on your shelf; instead, it is to curate a highly personal collection of resources around themes you are curious about. Instead of a celebration of everything you know, an antilibrary is an ode to everything you want to explore.
Building an antilibrary: the power of unread books - Ness LabsYour job, really, is to find people who love you for reasons you hardly understand, and to love them back, and to try as hard as you can to make it all easier for each other.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessBut if going to therapy has taught me anything, it’s that nothing is actually solved by intellectualizing and pathologizing every part of what we feel — and when we try, we’re usually sort of wrong anyway. Your emotions, by and large, are not a problem to be fixed in service of producing a better, more manageable, more loveable self. They just want to be felt.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessWe all exist to save each other. There is barely anything else worth living for.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessNo passion, no growth, no difficult conversations — that’s your therapist’s job.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessBeing alone is hard, to be sure, but it’s also deceptively easy — it requires nothing of us.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessIf you’ve been encouraged to define a healthy life as a frictionless one, I think it may be inevitable that a life devoid of contact starts to feel like healing.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessWhen relationships are made difficult by traumas, anxieties, and neuroses — and when those issues are triggered as you navigate complicated relationships — being alone really can feel a lot like being cured.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princesst damning of all, they are both infected by the same rotten premise: that it is possible, even ideal, to get better by yourself.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessAfter every experience – project or job– pay attention to what you loved, what you hated, what you were good at, and what you were bad at
10 things I wish I knew about careers when I startednowadays, my life trajectory feels as if i am waiting for the arrival of an unknown presence, whether it be a cause i care deeply about or a person i will come to love in their entirety. it feels like an autumn of patience
unrequitedness | arielle lokbut this isn’t the life i enjoy living; i undoubtedly live to have a higher purpose for others.
unrequitedness | arielle lokYou don't have to live in a great city your whole life to benefit from it.
Cities and Ambitionvancouver is not a wonderful city to spend my most determined, wistful & jovial years. but, i say with utmost thankfulness that it has allowed me to experience my greatest, mundane moments.
arielle lokCan we boil down our lack of a relationship to a series of instances?” He asked. “Or is it more that at some point, neither of us felt lonely enough to put in the work to maintain the relationship?”
I Asked Four Former Friends Why We Stopped Speaking. Here’s What I Learned | VogueI forgot that people can grow apart and still love each other from afar.
I Asked Four Former Friends Why We Stopped Speaking. Here’s What I Learned | Voguethe difference between selling my savings to fund current spending versus taking out loans is that in the latter case, the entirety of my stock portfolio (ideally) continues to grow, rather than whatever amount is left as I sell.
How I got $25,000 in debt · Life at the Margin · Natecation · NatecationThat inequality, when compounded over time and amplified by the cretinous and absolutely joyless mediocrity of the people in whose accounts that compounding gets done, winds up not just freezing the world in place, but shrinking it to the size of their own incuriosity.
The Nostalgia Cycle Loop - by kyla scanlonOne is nostalgic not for the past the way it was, but for the past the way it could have been. It is this past perfect that one strives to realize in the future.
The Nostalgia Cycle Loop - by kyla scanlonIt’s a form of forgetting, but it’s also escapism
The Nostalgia Cycle Loop - by kyla scanlonBeing reminiscent is reactive. We reinvent the past: The idea of the past being more unpredictable than the future is a nod to the reinvention of time that we often do in our own heads. And then we remake it: We tend to look back fondly on moments that might not warrant such warmth - but then we go on and remake those feelings with our technology and our movies and our music. And it’s mostly because we are scared: It’s all a defense! A way to protect ourselves from the overwhelming speed towards some eventual inevitability that we are experiencing.
The Nostalgia Cycle Loop - by kyla scanlon“grief isn’t something that can unfold over a prolonged period of time, it’s something that must. It is an inherently, undeniably, enduring thing”.
When I Get Jealous - by Anna Fusco - UnsupervisedGrief, like jealousy, is also hard to express because there’s a flagrant entitlement about it.
When I Get Jealous - by Anna Fusco - Unsupervisedthe looming threat of loss that provokes jealousy in the first place. I am losing something — my mother — and the threat is real. I am not jealous of what other people have per se, but what they have reminds me of what is growing scarce, or maybe what I never had.

6 Things I'm Trying to Say More - by Annika Hansteen-IzoraI think it’s in our best interest to point out the small things that delight us. The more seemingly meaningless, the better, as this typically signals a greater presence of magic.
6 Things I'm Trying to Say More - by Annika Hansteen-IzoraPeople who do great work are not necessarily happier than everyone else, but they're happier than they'd be if they didn't. In fact, if you're smart and ambitious, it's dangerous not to be productive. People who are smart and ambitious but don't achieve much tend to become bitter.
How to Do Great WorkColleagues don't just affect your work, though; they also affect you. So work with people you want to become like, because you will.

The Case for Traveling MoreSpending a few months in Peru and Bolivia won't make you a corporate pariah, but spending your entire life in one place will certainly make you culturally illiterate.
The Case for Traveling MoreI always experienced a sense of cognitive dissonance and discontent, forced to settle in to what I had settled for.
On Settling Down - by Steven SchlafmanI built a life for myself in a state of perpetual motion, with little sense of rootedness.
On Settling Down - by Steven SchlafmanFor my entire life, I’ve been in a constant state of motion, moving from one place to another, never feeling quite settled. It’s as if movement was programmed into my life by circumstances beyond my control and eventually by my own design.
