I think I almost unconsciously pull information and various fragments from the cabinets in my brain and then weave them together.
Haruki Murakami: Where My Characters Come From - The AtlanticToday more than ever, we need individuals rather than corporations to guide the web’s future. The web is called the web because its vitality depends on just that—an interconnected web of individual nodes breathing life into a vast network. This web needs to actually work for people instead of being powered by a small handful of big corporations—like Facebook/Instagram, Twitter, and Google.
My website is a shifting house next to a river of knowledge. What could yours be? – The Creative IndependentMy favorite aspect of websites is their duality: they’re both subject and object at once. In other words, a website creator becomes both author and architect simultaneously.
My website is a shifting house next to a river of knowledge. What could yours be? – The Creative IndependentTo read it is to feel turned inside out—as if our own foibles have been written in soap on the mirror, to be read when we wake up from the trance of our own self-importance.
The Hungarian Despair of Magda Szabó’s “The Door” | The New YorkerThis is bad for musicians, artists and writers on a business level, but the deeper implications are truly terrifying for art and its preservation. We’re handing art over entirely to the profit motive. We’re leaving truth to the whims of a financialized, speculative economy, and giving censorship powers to CEOs.
Own Music! Own Books! – PopulaWhen you meet a blocked path, what if you meander a different path rather than plowing through? Wander a bit, keeping your eyes open, and you might just find a shortcut to your destination.
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangRather than trying hard at doing the hard things, I’ve been thinking about what it takes to just do things that feel easy (or make the hard things easy).
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangI think the path to sustainable resolution of heightened inner dissonance is actually integrating the parts of yourself that you hide in shame.
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangEmbarrassing myself is at least the narrative I tell in my head, but in reality, no one who matters to you cares when you’re working on something in this way.
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangWhat I lack in talent, I make up for in work. I just do it over and over and over again until some small part of it starts to feel easy.
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangI’ve been thinking about how life is just an exercise in making hard things easy.
making hard things easy - by Spencer ChangEach language is born from languages and thrives and grows and exists due to a sort of ecosystem of languages. And that’s what we need to put at the center, that we need to keep that multiplicity at the center and to avoid the impulse, rather, to sort of diminish that multiplicity in search of a dominant language.
Jhumpa Lahiri on Preserving the Multiplicity of Language ‹ Literary HubDigital humanism is a belief in the idea that persistence of knowledge and ideas requires maintaining them in new ways and in new technologies. But not only that, persistence is not enough. Knowledge can only build on what has come before it if we build the mechanisms to do this well. For example, science can no longer be burdened by outdated publication models, ones first developed in the Seventeenth Century. Digital humanism blends of the potential of new technologies with the knowledge of the old.
The Digital Humanism ProjectFor a murkily-defined term, the influence on users’ accounts can be exorbitant.
Terms of Service: On algorithmic collapse & the culture of compliance enforced by covert shadow bans | | atractivoquenobelloI could place my personal site on a street near the websites of my friends. We could form a little village. I could then go to my favorite sites and walk around nearby to find sites like them. This is a spatial interface that would give us a new and intuitive way for navigating the Internet and understanding how websites are related each other.
Spatial Interfaces | Dark Blue HeavenOf course, teachers are themselves products of the same twelve-year compulsory school programs that so thoroughly bore their students, and as school personnel they are trapped inside structures even more rigid than those imposed upon the children. Who, then, is to blame? We all are.

What Makes for a Good Blog? | 43 Folderswe write everything in small letters, as we save time. also: why 2 alphabets, if one achieves the same? why capitalize, if you can't speak big?
writing in small lettersWhat kind of space is this for language, for poetry, for art? We’re now almost thirty years deep into the experiment of the World Wide Web, and we still don’t really know.
Echoes on the Internet: Eve L. Ewing and Hanif Abdurraqib | The Spectacledesign is an exercise in form giving, and we often simply accept the reality with which we are presented. But what if we pushed back against these established conventions of design to provoke a type of thinking that art has provoked for centuries? What if we stepped back and paused? Design doesn’t always have to be about the optimal approach.
Taking a Walk across the Internet | Magazine | MoMABut design elements are not there merely for convenience; the tools of our day to day are constantly shaping our perceptions and work.
Taking a Walk across the Internet | Magazine | MoMAArt and artists offer a foundation for a new way to think about our relationship with the Internet. I wonder what it would be like to take a walk through a website. What if, instead of rushing from page to page, download after download, we instead treated the Internet as a garden of ideas and visual ephemera, waiting to be explored? Rocks to be flipped over?
Taking a Walk across the Internet | Magazine | MoMADérive, or drifting3, involved taking an unplanned journey through space
Taking a Walk across the Internet | Magazine | MoMAInstead of racing off to load the next page as quickly as possible, what would happen if we took a moment to breathe? What if we didn’t always know where our next click might lead us? What if we were able to decongest this information superhighway?
Taking a Walk across the Internet | Magazine | MoMATo understand the networked self, we must first understand the self, which is a ceaseless endeavor. The ultimate problem of the Internet might stem not from the discrete technology but from the Frankensteinian way in which humanity’s invention has exceeded our own capacities.
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerToo much of human experience has been flattened into a single “technological portal,” Smith writes. “The more you use the Internet, the more your individuality warps into a brand, and your subjectivity transforms into an algorithmically plottable vector of activity.”
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerWe know that what we post and consume on social media feels increasingly empty, and yet we are powerless to stop it. Perhaps if we had better language for the problem, it would be easier to solve.
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerAll are trapped by the daily pressure to produce ancillary content—memes, selfies, shitposts—to fill an endless void.
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerRevenue comes not necessarily from the value of content itself but from its ability to attract attention, to get eyeballs on ads, which are most often bought and sold through corporations like Google and Facebook.
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerOnce upon a time, the Internet was predicated on user-generated content. The hope was that ordinary people would take advantage of the Web’s low barrier for publishing to post great things, motivated simply by the joy of open communication.
How the Internet Turned Us Into Content Machines | The New YorkerPlay is not about passing time, it's about inventing and becoming who you are and who you wish to become. You deserve to experience a web where you are free to be who you wanna be and do what you wanna do; one where you decide how to spend your time, not an algorithm that exploits you for profit. The web revival cant fix everything wrong in the world, but we can make it better, one little homepage at a time.
Intro to the Web Revival #1: What is the Web Revival? | Melon's ThoughtsMy family showed me that it was action, and not an inherent similarity in genetics, that bound us together.
The People Who Show Up for You: A Reading List of Unconventional Families ‹ Literary HubAs people grow increasingly atomized, family (biological or found) can bring people together, soothe some of the pains of modern life, and model how to be a person.
The People Who Show Up for You: A Reading List of Unconventional Families ‹ Literary HubThe word family, to me, meant, and still means: the people who show up for you.
The People Who Show Up for You: A Reading List of Unconventional Families ‹ Literary HubTranslation is a form of creative writing, it’s just creative writing within very strict parameters.
Meet American Daisy Rockwell, who translates some of India’s finest Hindi writers into EnglishA translator is like a musician, and the original author is the composer. There are an infinite number of ways to play Vivaldi on the violin, or Bhairav raga on the sitar. There are also a lot of ways to mess them both up horrendously so that the audience members clap their hands over their ears and run out of the room. When we say a translation is unsuccessful, it is because the translator has not been able to perform the underlying text in the target language in a felicitous manner so that it could be enjoyed by the new readers as much as it was in the original.
Meet American Daisy Rockwell, who translates some of India’s finest Hindi writers into EnglishOf course translators must disappear. Despite the very strenuous and granular work required in translation, in the end, the translator’s work generally billows like a diaphanous curtain across the work, and the reader doesn’t notice the translation at all, unless he or she is a translator too, in which case he or she notices all the details, both good and bad.
Meet American Daisy Rockwell, who translates some of India’s finest Hindi writers into EnglishThere is a fluidity to the South Asian language-scape that is wholly lacking in the United States, which is, despite the diverse population, ferociously monolingual. Code-switching, the practice of sliding effortlessly from one language to the next, or mixed idioms, like Hinglish, are practically non-existent in the US, outside of immigrant communities.
Meet American Daisy Rockwell, who translates some of India’s finest Hindi writers into EnglishIt feels like going home, same as always, and opening the door to find all these people there: someone who feels like an old friend even though we’ve never met, someone who means the world to me but I can never see again, somebody crying, somebody laughing, people from far away — and I’m there, too. We don’t talk about anything special, but we’re all there, just sharing time. That’s how it feels.

Discover the shortlist: Mieko Kawakami, ‘I grew up in a house with no books’ | The Booker PrizesAs I’m writing this, it feels... almost sad that I craved the sense of belonging so much that I sacrificed my enjoyment of learning to be more interesting to others.
It’s okay to be boringI’ll have to go through the long and arduous process of deep learning, instead of acquiring small, different pieces of knowledge that are easy and quick wins.
It’s okay to be boringI was afraid if I dived too deep into a topic, I might waste my time because I could have used it to acquire new knowledge instead.
It’s okay to be boringSomehow an unconscious decision was developed that in order to belong somewhere, I had to be more interesting and signal to others I was also one of them. So, I scrambled to familiarise myself and accumulate... whatever interesting information that would make me more interesting, so that I can connect with others and make more friends.
It’s okay to be boringI see myself as a curiosity-driven person but another part of me is drawn to many things because they may make me more interesting.
It’s okay to be boringI think having your own home page is an invaluable opportunity to collect thoughts and ideas, while having a (theoretically) unrestricted and independent creative outlet. Think of it as my little contribution to keep the web open, accessible and decentralized.

dianakimball/mentoring: The source of a distributed mentoring movement.Finding "internet people" to look up to never felt like a hurdle: as soon as I started looking, I found people whose writing and outlook and accomplishments I longed to learn from. Better yet, the open book of life online gave me a more vivid picture of what my future could look like. The internet felt to me then, and feels to me now, like an electric frontier. Opportunities abound for bold experiments and spontaneous connections.
