"We anticipate that its ease of use will help us in our company climate change planning by being able to provide timely information for business decision making. We are just in the early stages of using the tool, but I anticipate that it will be an important factor in helping us make better informed business decisions in to the future. As most companies know, carbon accounting is growing increasingly complex, so it's really beneficial to have a solution in hand that will help us navigate this part of our strategy moving forward,"

Even if all that dystopian data did exist, it would still be tricky to draw individual — rather than simply aggregate — conclusions about which behavioral indicators potentially presaged ill actions. “The behavioral sciences aren’t nearly as clear-cut as the physical sciences,” Mr. Luckey said.

Implementing such systems the wrong way can, too, degrade the employee-employer relationship. Part of skirting such Big-Brother territory is avoiding injudicious surveillance: not simply ingesting all data that’s available and legal, regardless of its proven utility.

Software can watch for suspicious computer behavior or it can dig into an employee’s credit reports, arrest records and marital-status updates. It can check to see if Cheryl is downloading bulk cloud data or run a sentiment analysis on Tom’s emails to see if he’s getting testier over time. Analysis of this data, say the companies that monitor insider risk, can point to potential problems in the workplace.

The tech industry is challenging a Texas law aimed at stopping social media “censorship.” The law, HB 20, which was prompted by complaints from conservatives, requires platforms with at least 50 million users to refrain from removing user posts because they convey a certain viewpoint.

If the Supreme Court refuses to act, it might signal a sea change in free speech law. That would be “a pretty profound indication” that at least some of the justices believe the government can have much more say in telling private companies what to do, Lakier said. What’s more likely to happen, she believes, is that the Supreme Court will stay the Texas law for now, giving the companies what they want without indicating what could happen later.

Barcelona, Spain, a recent trial used computer vision technology on city buses to map places along the route where there were conflicts with vehicles, pedestrians and others, to identify where accident risks were highest. “When you collect that kind of data for an entire year with thousands of buses and thousands of streets, you get somewhere,”

energy efficiency also means they could feasibly be powered by renewable energy, and used to do 'AI at the edge' -- processing the data where it is being collected, such as weather stations in Antarctica, rather than sending it back to large data centres. It also means they could be used on wearable devices to process biometric data on the body, such as predicting and regulating insulin levels for diabetic people or detecting abnormal heartbeats.

software run on traditional silicon-based computers was used to simulate the magnet interactions, in turn simulating the brain. Now, the team have been able to use the magnets themselves to process and store data -- cutting out the middleman of the software simulation and potentially offering enormous energy savings.
