Specifically, institutions focus on the static and inert elements of social structures — the aspects that persist over time — whereas extitutions focus on the dynamic and mutating elements of social structures — the aspects that continuously evolve over time.
An Introduction to Extitutional Theory | by Jessy Kate Schingler | Berkman Klein Center Collection | MediumSocial dynamics that are not part of an institution are not unstructured, just differently structured.
An Introduction to Extitutional Theory | by Jessy Kate Schingler | Berkman Klein Center Collection | MediumIn an expansive Tumblr comment from thecarboncoast, lunarpunk is defined loosely as: “Aspeculative fiction style/genre defined by an obscured, shrouded, and/or dark near-future where the business of its inhabitants is done in secretive, cryptic or mysterious ways, accentuated by a visual style hearkening to lunar, occult, Pagan, Wiccan, Satanic, Anarchaic, Chaotic, practices, and comprised of world-building details which are more ideal for introverted, quiet, isolated or self-reliant people. Doesn’t mean an extroverted Christian isn’t part of Lunarpunk, or that someone who practices anything m…
What is Lunarpunk? Can It Solve Solarpunk's Problems?Open Collective is committed to making that dream a reality. But ownership can be tricky. How can a for-profit company be owned by everyone? To pull it off, we need a legal structure that allows the community to become stewards of Open Collective on behalf of the commons.
Pathways for Open Collective’s “Exit to Community”operationalize our values
Exit to Community: A New Model for Organizationsusing E2C as a launchpoint or framework
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsIt also gives us a way to think about an end point beyond a startup getting acquired or going public through an IPO, or a nonprofit that’s designed to exist in perpetuity.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsExit to Community provides one alternative path for growth, longevity, and success for new organizations or startups. It gives us a way of thinking about structures that encourage growth and ambition, while still being designed to benefit the community.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsWe don’t have a lot of structures or models based on sustainable growth and shared power.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsIf a place has veered off course, isn’t supportive to its workers or its community, an Exit to Community can be a way to re-direct.
Exit to Community: A New Model for Organizationsin alternative economic models and sharing power.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsThe concept is being spearheaded by Zebras Unite and in partnership with University of Colorado Boulder’s Media Enterprise Design Lab. They’ve built an excellent primer for the concept that we highly recommend!
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsWhile it’s most easily understood as something that can exist in a startup context, E2C can also be used as a framework for other kinds of organizations, including nonprofits.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsThe exit could be a transition into a cooperative (like PeepMe), a trust, a nonprofit, a for-profit company, or something else entirely.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsAs an example, an E2C for Gimlet might have meant that instead of selling to Spotify, it could have transformed itself into a cooperative
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsIt’s simplest to think of as an alternative to growth in a startup context.
Exit to Community: A New Model for OrganizationsThe slightly longer answer is that in a startup society, you're not asking people to buy a product (which is an economic, individualistic pitch) but to join a community (which is a cultural, collective pitch).
What do I think about network states? If you are born into the self-made man track, you should be more calculative in your decision-making than those born with a silver spoon. Still learn their perspectives, but definitely wire in your own judgment before following their decision.
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | Medium1. You understand the cultural and technological context of a concept 2. You identify key characteristics associated with a concept 3. You feel safe defending your stance publicly, and revise thesis accordingly
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumBuilding your own, original thesis in web3 that aligns with your chosen role is almost too crucial to protect you financially and spiritually.

Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumUsually, traditional VCs exit (sell equity for money) in later rounds, after IPO, or during equity buyback.
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumCan you code? Can you read code? Coding is not a required skill for you to succeed in web3, but having it can really unearth scarce information to accelerate wealth accumulation (both for institutions and for your own). For example, knowing how to code allows you to Host MEV bot Do on-chain data analysis Do Smart Money analysis Run arb bot Code your own product & startup idea
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumYou either treat web3 as technological innovation, disregard the rest, and bridge onto web2 with a good product-market fit, or you embrace everything in web3 and manifest destiny with web3 native tools and ideologies.
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumRoughly speaking, bitcoin is down the path of becoming a “money”, and the rest (Ethereum, NEAR, etc) are becoming a “technology”. Choosing the “theme” currency of your web3 journey now represents two different philosophies and pathways to a successful exit.
Some High-level Reflections and Cruel Words Young People Should Consider Before Aping into Web3 | by 桜島Mai | Jul, 2022 | MediumAs my friend Jahed said, “You either participate and bend the will of this thing in your direction, or you literally remove your own agency and become a non-playable character. There’s no reason to make yourself an NPC.”
Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity Politics(as done currently by projects like the incredible Open Collective that are currently charting an ‘exit to community’) can get a lot more done than big government bureaucracies that have billions behind them. 5

Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity PoliticsThere’s also the seriously unappreciated potential of public goods funding. The mid-century social democratic welfare state did legitimately improve things for a lot of people.

Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity PoliticsOne of the most unfortunate things about the mass socialist movements of the 19th and early 20th century was the failure to promote alternate ways of doing things in the here and now (encouraged by a vision that saw social change as coming from good socialists seizing mass centralized industry through either electoral or revolutionary means). A big problem with a model of social change that posits major breaks between radically different ways of doing things is that people (even radicals) really underestimate just how complex our existing world is and how much we get by on accumulated “common …

Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity PoliticsWith programmable money and smart-contracts you can, to some extent, just create game theoretically cooperative incentives in the here and now in the ways that authoritarian-communists think The New Socialist Man would’ve (but somehow never does) or that capitalism grinds into the pavement.

Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity PoliticsSo sure, some tactics are more captured and fundamentally compromised than others (see: critiques of reformism) and we should distinguish them along these lines, but if you want to be pure, then changing things for the better shouldn’t be your goal

Center for a Stateless Society » No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity Politicscrypto anarchy will create a liquid market for any and all material which can be put into words and pictures.
The Crypto Anarchist ManifestoThese developments will alter completely the nature of government regulation, the ability to tax and control economic interactions, the ability to keep information secret, and will even alter the nature of trust and reputation.
The Crypto Anarchist ManifestoArise, you have nothing to lose but your barbed wire fences!
The Crypto Anarchist ManifestoLibertaria will thrive in cyberspace.
Libertaria in CyberspaceAnd this is the most compelling advantage of "Crypto Libertaria": an arbitrarily large number of separate "nations" can simultaneously exist. This allows for rapid experimentation, self-selection, and evolution. If folks get tired of some virtual community, they can leave. The cryptographic aspects mean their membership in some community is unknown to others (vis-a-vis the physical or outside world, i.e., their "true names") and physical coercion is reduced.
Libertaria in CyberspaceCyberspace looks more promising. There is more "space" in cyberspace, thus allowing more security and more colonizable space. And this space is coterminous with our physical space, accessible with proper terminals from any place in the world (though there may be attempts in physical space to block access, to restrict access to necessay cryptographic methods, etc.).
Libertaria in CyberspacePrivacy in an open society also requires cryptography. If I say something, I want it heard only by those for whom I intend it. If the content of my speech is available to the world, I have no privacy. To encrypt is to indicate the desire for privacy, and to encrypt with weak cryptography is to indicate not too much desire for privacy. Furthermore, to reveal one's identity with assurance when the default is anonymity requires the cryptographic signature.
A Cypherpunk's ManifestoPrivacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.
A Cypherpunk's Manifestofringes of the law, whether because of criminal activity or the inability for the law to keep up with technology
What is cyberpunk? - Polygon“I personally think that any cyberpunk work worthy of the name needs to show that dehumanizing, unequal relationship of power and politics as part of its makeup,” says Pondsmith. “You don’t raise hell in a future where things are a Star Trekkian Utopia — you raise hell when all the forces in power are arrayed against you personally, and you have to fight back.”
