  • Laser Powder Bed Fusion is a leading additive manufacturing technology, which has been used successfully with a range of lower melting point materials (titanium alloys, nickel alloys, steels). This work looks to extend its use to refractory metals, such as those considered in this paper where the behaviour of pure tungsten powder is investigated. A strategy for fabricating high density parts was developed by creating a process map in which the effect of laser energy density was studied. The process quality was assessed using different techniques including light optical microscopy, XCT, SEM and…

  • The relative densities ranged from 94 to 98% but there was evidence of micro cracks and defects in specimens.

  • Our government spent seven trillion dollars last year. Today, we're twenty-nine trillion dollars in debt. Every year spending increases, and none of our problems are solved. Congress has dragged our entire country into a psychotic class war narrative, in which the public is made to believe we’re one or two billionaire liquidations away from a world of abundance. But where have the trillions gone? I’m sure it’s frustrating for the One Party that favored targets like Musk can now directly ask this question to billions of people. But Musk’s influence, contextualized by Ryan Petersen’s recent trip…

  • The Fourier transform is a ubiquitous mathematical operation which arises naturally in optics. We propose and demonstrate a practical method to optically evaluate a complex-to-complex discrete Fourier transform. By implementing the Fourier transform optically we can overcome the limiting O(nlogn) complexity of fast Fourier transform algorithms. Efficiently extracting the phase from the well-known optical Fourier transform is challenging. By appropriately decomposing the input and exploiting symmetries of the Fourier transform we are able to determine the phase directly from straightforward int…

  • The abundance or scantiness of this supply, too, seems to depend more upon the former of those two circumstances than upon the latter. Among the savage nations of hunters and fishers, every individual who is able to work is more or less employed in useful labour, and endeavours to provide, as well as he can, the necessaries and conveniencies of life, for himself, and such of his family or tribe as are either too old, or too young, or too infirm, to go a-hunting and fishing. Such nations, however, are so miserably poor, that, from mere want, they are frequently reduced, or at least think themse…

  • 4. What were your experiences like at Ad Astra? Ad Astra was really a weird school, in the best of ways. Some anecdotes were a huge water blaster fight where we had weeks in advance to build forts, pressure guns, and various contraptions to get as many of the other teams wet so we could capture the flag. We have speakers visit us every Friday and I had a lot of opportunities to talk to some pretty inspiring figures and even sometimes work with them on projects or products. One of the hardest classes I took was a Haskell & Combinatorial Logic course where we learned Haskell to make a hyper-real…

  • Furthermore, while 2 years might not seem like a lot, it actually is a lot if you want to make the most out of your young creative years. And as I said, you have A LOT of freedom to do what you want to do. Take 13 credits and take the first year easy? Go ahead. Jump right in your department and do research? That's perfectly fine as well. If you've made a lot of mistakes like I did - it's not such a big deal - employers and graduate schools like to see improving trends, and are not as statistics-obsessed as college admissions is. You can also think of the net gain per year - I'm definitely lear…

  • Who are the Neuromantics? Simply put, if a person feels an unquenchable thirst to understand the mystery of existence—a yearning to grasp the nature of complexity, consciousness, or cosmic evolution—then they are a Neuromantic. You might be a Neuromantic. If you are, we would love your help!

  • We’re also told to work at a startup first because it’s less risky. I don’t buy that either. Sure, there may be less financial risk in starting a company, but I don’t buy the corollary risk typically associated with founding a company—that if we fail, we will be viewed as a failure and thus unemployable. On the contrary: In my opinion, starting a company is usually a better way to build your network and your brand relative to joining a company, in addition to having disproportionate financial upside.

  • HIT-SI3 is a one-meter diameter spheromak current drive experiment. The plasma is formed and sustained by three inductive helicity injectors. The loop voltage and magnetic flux in each injector are oscillated in phase. The three injectors can be phased 120 or 60 degrees apart giving constant helicity injection. Operating frequencies include 14.5 kHz, 47.5 kHz, and higher. Toroidal current 3 times greater than the quadrature sum of injector currents has been achieved.
